Job Description

The GIS Technician will support the Asset Management Group by performing GIS data cleanup and ongoing maintenance within the production system. This role focuses on editing and validating spatial data, supporting asset management mapping and data integrity, and providing mapping and data services to internal departments. Responsibilities

  • Edit map features and corresponding attribute data in the GIS to ensure accurate and up-to-date asset information.
  • Distribute and update maps for other departments upon request, ensuring stakeholders have current mapping resources.
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of data entered into the GIS and complete service work orders in a timely manner.
  • Identify missing or incorrect information on assets in GIS, SharePoint, and related systems, and research and resolve these issues.
  • Research and process requests for service line abandonments, ensuring proper documentation and mapping updates.
  • Collaborate with the GIS department to research and resolve issues involving missing or inaccurately mapped services.
  • Work with asset management and related teams to complete data cleansing projects, maintenance projects, and data requests.
  • Support other departments by fulfilling data requests and assisting with special projects using GIS tools and datasets.
  • Participate in asset management mapping and cleanup activities to improve data quality and system reliability.
  • Maintain organized mapping files and documentation related to GIS and asset management activities.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering and other groups, to clarify requirements and share updates.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support GIS and asset management objectives.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, or a related field, or a GIS certificate if the bachelor’s degree is in a non-related field.
  • A GIS certification and proficiency in ArcGIS may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement.
  • Exposure to and hands-on experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Proficiency with ESRI products and tools used for mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Experience editing map features and attribute data in GIS environments.
  • Strong skills in mapping and working with geographic information systems.
  • 1–2 years of experience in asset management mapping and data cleanup is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to identify and correct missing or inaccurate asset information in GIS and related systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to verify data accuracy and complete work orders and requests within required timeframes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography or a GIS-related field is preferred.
  • GIS certificate required if the bachelor’s degree is in a non-related field.
  • Experience with Trimble units is preferred for field data collection and mapping.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro (ArcPro) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint for storing and managing GIS-related documents and data.
  • Experience supporting data requests and special projects using GIS for various departments.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality and consistency.
  • Ability to collaborate with GIS, engineering, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Interest in professional growth and advancement within a GIS and asset management environment.
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Work Environment

The GIS Technician works in a mixed office and field environment. In the office, the technician collaborates closely with other GIS technicians, engineering teams, and cross-functional groups, using ESRI and ArcGIS software and related mapping tools. The role also includes visits to field sites to gather data for mapping purposes, which may involve ongoing exposure to outdoor elements. The typical schedule is Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the office, with Thursday and Friday remote once the technician is fully trained and acclimated to the systems. New hires begin with five days per week in the office for onboarding and system training before transitioning to the hybrid schedule. Overtime and occasional travel may be required. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Birmingham, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
