Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an approved program for specific field of study in Science
  • Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree
  • Microsoft Office

    Job Overview:

  • This is a professional position that requires direct patient communication. The genetic counseling assistant reports to Precision Medicine supervisor with guidance from clinical genetic counselors. This position is responsible for pre-genetic counseling work flow in conjunction with the genetics navigator and genetic counselors that includes but is not limited to the following: prepare genetic counseling charts with all needed documents and pertinent pathology/medical reports, format and print pedigrees, facilitate data entry of health history questionnaires, calculate appropriate risk models, assist with preauthorization for visit and/or testing, and assist with the communication to appropriate labs to verify insurance coverage. The genetic counseling assistant is also responsible for post-genetic counseling work flow that includes but is not limited to: coordinating paperwork and authorization for family/physician communication, scheduling patients for relevant follow-up, enter post-visit documentation, preparing patient test requisitions for genetic testing and research testing with basic genetics and testing requirements, assisting in necessary preparation of documentation for test processing, assuring the safe package of blood and saliva, working closely with various laboratories / insurance during the pre-authorization process, executing requests for medical necessity letters, preparing genetic test results for scanning into EMR and enter test results into clinical/research database. The genetic counseling assistant assists with patient scheduling in the following capacities: calling patients to schedule appointments from the genetic counseling work queue, reviewing referrals for complicated cases then sending to genetic navigator for triage, making reminder phone calls to patients the week prior to their visit.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare genetic counseling charts with all needed documents and pertinent pathology/medical reports, format and print pedigrees, facilitate data entry of health history questionnaires, calculate appropriate risk models, assist with preauthorization for visit and/or testing, and assist with the communication to appropriate labs to verify insurance coverage
