Gas Service Technician III

Under the general direction of the Assistant Gas Department Supervisor and Construction Chief, this position assists with the construction, operation, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system. Work includes supporting installation, repair, and inspection activities while ensuring safety and compliance with all applicable regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Assist with construction, installation, and maintenance of natural gas mains and services.
  • Assist with the repair, testing, and installation of gas meters and regulators.
  • Assist in locating, investigating, and repairing natural gas leaks.
  • Perform utility locating for gas mains and services for internal and external requests.
  • Assist with valve maintenance and operation of regulating stations.
  • Operate and maintain department vehicles, tools, and construction equipment.
  • Follow all safety procedures and departmental policies.
  • Participate in required training and maintain all certifications, licenses, and Operator Qualifications (OQs) as required by federal and state regulations and the Public Utilities Commission policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

  • Ability to learn and safely operate Gas Department equipment and tools.
  • Basic knowledge of underground utility construction methods and practices.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of pipefitting, welding, and mechanical systems is preferred.
  • Ability to work safely in potentially hazardous or explosive environments.
  • Ability to work with and around pressurized natural gas systems.
  • Ability to follow written procedures, including the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferred experience in underground construction, equipment operation, plumbing/pipefitting, welding or related field.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must obtain a valid Class “A” CDL within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required Operator Qualifications (OQs) within one (1) year of hire.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This position is subject to emergency call-out.
  • Employees must be able to respond within thirty (30) minutes of notification. Residency requirements must be met within six (6) months of hire. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination.
  • This position is part of a progression and is expected to advance to Gas Service Technician II and Gas Service Technician I based on qualifications, performance, and departmental needs.
  • Participation in a standby/on-call rotation is required.
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
