Job Title: FPGA Engineer

Job Description

The FPGA Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing FPGA-based digital logic solutions that power advanced ground-based radio navigational aids, surveillance radios, and software-defined radio systems. This role supports the full FPGA development lifecycle, from requirements analysis through verification and maintenance, and plays a key part in a rapidly growing team supporting the replacement of air traffic radars.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain FPGA architectures and digital logic for Ground-Based Radio Navigational Aids (NAVAIDS), Surveillance Radios (ADS-B/WAM), Software-Defined Radios (SDR), and other assigned systems.
  • Develop, update, and optimize FPGA code, including simulation, synthesis, place-and-route, and timing closure activities.
  • Support the complete FPGA development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture and detailed design, coding, hardware and firmware integration, verification, validation, and maintenance of both new and legacy designs.
  • Implement digital signal processing algorithms and software-defined radio architectures on FPGA platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware and software engineers to integrate FPGA designs into system-level solutions and ensure seamless interoperability.
  • Debug and optimize FPGA designs in both simulation environments and on-target hardware using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Participate in technical design reviews to ensure compliance with customer requirements, internal engineering processes, and quality standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of FPGA design practices, documentation, and development workflows within the team.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in FPGA development, including architecture, coding, simulation, and implementation.
  • Proficiency in at least one hardware description language commonly used for FPGA design (for example, VHDL or Verilog).
  • Hands-on experience with FPGA toolchains such as Xilinx Vivado or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with simulation and verification tools for FPGA designs or similar electronic design automation tools.
  • Strong understanding of digital logic design, timing analysis, and timing closure on FPGA devices.
  • Ability to implement and optimize digital signal processing algorithms on FPGA platforms.
  • Experience integrating FPGA designs with hardware and firmware in complex embedded systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with Ground-Based Radio Navigational Aids (NAVAIDS), ADS-B, WAM, or other surveillance radio systems.
  • Experience in software-defined radio (SDR) architectures and their implementation on FPGA platforms.
  • Familiarity with laboratory test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related measurement tools.
  • Experience supporting and maintaining legacy FPGA designs while developing new solutions.
  • Strong documentation skills and the ability to contribute to design reviews and formal engineering processes.
  • Interest in or experience with systems related to air traffic radar and aviation-grade communication or navigation systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, in-office role with a standard schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position is based in the Olathe, KS area and will transition to a brand-new facility in South Olathe, offering a modern, well-equipped engineering environment. You will work on advanced radio navigation, surveillance, and software-defined radio systems as part of a dynamic and rapidly growing team supporting a major air traffic radar replacement program. The environment emphasizes collaboration between hardware, firmware, and software engineers, hands-on work with lab equipment, and a strong focus on quality, reliability, and innovation in safety-critical systems.
