Fleet Assistant

Performs tasks as a helper to Fleet Manager, Fleet Supervisor, and mechanics. An employee in this class works under the supervision of the Fleet Manager/Fleet Supervisor who assigns work to be performed. A Fleet Assistant is an entry level position in training for a Vehicle Mechanic classification. After one year in the position the employee will be eligible for promotion, upon successfully passing the Vehicle Mechanic entrance test, into a Vehicle Mechanic I position, however they should not remain in this position for more than two years.
  • Serves in an ostiary capacity to the Fleet Manager, Fleet Supervisor, and mechanics, and works independently as required.
  • General office support which includes but is not limited to answering phone calls, managing communication (emails, voicemail, etc.), greeting visitors. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Assisting with managing parts inventory, tracking parts usage, and ensuring that supplies are available.
  • This role involves handling scheduling, communication, and document organization, acting as a point of contact for internal customers and external vendors.
  • Some familiarity with common terminology, practices, processes, materials, and tools of the vehicle mechanic trade.
  • good mechanical aptitude; interest in and willingness to learn along with being in good physical condition.
  • Position will require the use of torches, welders, heavy lifting, bending, and stooping while working in a sometimes dirty, hot, and noisy environment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a routine basis and up to 90 pounds on an intermittent basis.
  • Some automotive and personal computer skills will be necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Michigan.
  • Experience as a helper or skilled Vehicle Mechanic, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Requirements
  • Proficient/experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook) and other relevant software.
  • May also perform basic maintenance duties like oil changes and tire repairs. helping mechanics with dismantling and reassembling vehicles, replacing parts, and performing routine maintenance.
  • May also include assisting with bookkeeping, invoices, or supply management.
