Firefighters must annually pass the Individual Physical Ability Test (IPAT).
Graduation from high school or GED certification, or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.
Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.
Applicant must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination, and no greater than 44 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination.
Vision must be correctable to at least 20/40 in each eye.
Must be a nonsmoker.
Applicant must pass all phases of the hiring process designated by the Rules of the Civil Service Board.
Must possess or be able to obtain National Registry or South Dakota Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification within one year of hire.
Duty assignments that do not require the performance of “Emergency Functions” are not subject to IPAT or NFPA standards in making determination regarding fitness for duty.

- The City participates in the South Dakota Retirement System. Public Safety employees are considered Class B members of SDRS and they contribute 8% of their salary (pre-tax) which is matched by the City. Additionally, employees may choose to enroll in a Deferred Compensation Plan.

- The City recognizes 11 official paid holidays per calendar year. Fire Shift employees are granted 8 floating holidays annually as holiday leave. Holiday leave for new employees is prorated in their first year based on the date of assignment to shift.
- Vacation accural of 14 hours per month for Year 1 - 4. Accural level increase per Union contract language up to a maximum level of 22 hours per month at 11 years or more of service.
- Sick leave accrual of 5.54 hours bi-weekly with no maximum cap.
