This position supports setup, execution, monitoring, and documentation of field tests for mobile robotic platforms, vision systems, and autonomous vehicles operating in outdoor and rugged environments. You will work closely with engineering, product, and manufacturing teams to ensure systems perform reliably outside the lab.

Responsibilities

  • Execute field and system-level testing of autonomous robots, sensors, and vehicle platforms in outdoor, off-road, and industrial environments.
  • Support robot deployment activities including system setup, calibration, teardown, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Collect, log, and organize test data, observations, and performance metrics.
  • Operate autonomous and semi-autonomous systems safely during live test events.
  • Assist engineers with debugging hardware, sensors, wiring, and mechanical components during tests.
  • Maintain detailed test documentation, checklists, and reports to support design iteration and failure analysis.
  • Travel locally around Pittsburgh and occasionally domestically to support testing at customer or partner sites.
  • Work in varying environments including indoor labs, outdoor test ranges, construction-type terrain, and adverse weather conditions.
Essential Skills
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in engineering or relevant field.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in field testing, robotics, autonomous vehicles, electromechanical systems, or industrial equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to assemble, adjust, and inspect hardware systems.
  • Experience following structured test plans and documenting results.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and occasionally overnight.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Exposure to autonomous systems, mobile robots, or off-road vehicles.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based systems, data logging tools, or basic scripting (no software development required).
  • Understanding of sensors such as cameras, GNSS, IMUs, or LiDAR.
  • Prior work in defense, mining, agriculture, construction, or industrial automation environments.
  • Experience supporting prototype or early-stage hardware in field conditions.
Work Environment

The work environment is a combination of lab, warehouse, outdoor, and field settings. It involves frequent local travel within approximately 50 miles of Pittsburgh and occasional domestic travel.
