Field Services Repair Technician

Pay Range: $48,921.60-$56,872.40 annually, depending on knowledge and experience.
***Possession of Class B CDL required, Class A Preferred***

***This position will be advertised for one week and will close on April 10th.***

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High school or equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of experience in construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of a natural gas distribution system.
  • Two (2) years of related experience may be substituted for each year of natural gas distribution system experience (i.e., installation of natural gas or propane appliances and lines, gas measurement equipment, piping, underground utilities, etc.),
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Possession of an appropriate commercial driver’s license for equipment operated; successful completion of requirements and standards for Operator Qualifications as prescribed by departmental standards; and any other license, training, or certification required by law or regulation.
  • Be certified for heat fusing polyethylene pipe and appurtenances in accordance with the department's written procedures.
  • If applicable, certification in use of self-contained breathing apparatus in accordance with OSHA regulations.
  • Certified in 2” TDW or Mueller Linestopp machine

JOB SUMMARY
The Field Services Repair Technician performs skilled mechanical and construction work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of gas main and service lines.

An employee in this class works and is trained to do the full range of service work, including the operation of all equipment and tools. Supervision is exercised over a crew consisting of gas distribution worker and laborer employees. The employee is subject to emergency call out.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs truck inventory consisting of necessary supplies.
  • Installs gas mains; operates any equipment necessary to do the job, such as ditching machines, backhoe, and hydro-lift.
  • Installs service from main to house by making taps, putting pipe in ground, and checking to ensure that industry safety standards are met.
  • Repairs leaks in the gas system, which involves testing and pinpointing leaks.
  • Fuses polyethylene pipe; installs valves and fittings.
  • Installs gas meters and regulators, including the fitting of pipes and connections.
  • Locates and identifies gas mains and services.
  • Performs the duties in the absence of the Field Services Leader.
  • Directs the work of unskilled employees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local procedures, codes, and regulations which pertain to gas distribution and gas service.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of this work.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures, tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of natural gas mains, lines, and gas service.
  • Skill in the use and care of pertinent tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work.
  • Ability to withstand working out-of-doors under variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand piping drawings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch, and crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception.

The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
