Job Description

The Medical Assistant will support a busy Family Medicine clinic connected to a hospital, providing direct patient care and clinical support to providers in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. This role focuses on rooming patients, collecting vital signs and medical histories, performing point-of-care tests, coordinating appointments and referrals, and supporting efficient patient flow throughout the clinic. The position offers a Monday–Friday daytime schedule with no weekends or holidays, and strong opportunities for professional growth within a friendly and supportive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients efficiently and prepare exam rooms for provider visits.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, weight, and other measurements as requested.
  • Document patient signs and symptoms and complete accurate, up-to-date medical history information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Set up for and assist providers with a variety of clinical tasks and office exams as directed.
  • Perform point-of-care testing such as urinalysis, strep tests, flu tests, pregnancy tests, and other tests as directed by the provider and based on specialty needs.
  • Schedule tests, radiology exams, and appointments with specialists as requested by providers.
  • Enter all information related to patient check-in and check-out into the EMR accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Complete prior authorizations as needed and notify the office referral specialist when an insurance referral is required.
  • Collect and record patient height, weight, BMI, and other pertinent clinical information during visits.
  • Update and maintain accurate immunization records for patients.
  • Perform phone triage when scheduled, including responding to patient medical questions, relaying test results, processing medication refill requests, and providing call-backs to patients.
  • Fax, call, or transmit prescription refills as directed by providers.
  • Support walk-in patient care by performing triage, obtaining blood pressures, conducting urinalyses, responding to medication sample requests, and collecting patient history and other relevant information for the provider.
  • Function as a resource to visitors, providers, and staff by greeting everyone promptly and courteously and providing clear, professional communication.
  • Consistently support the mission and values of the organization in all interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Perform blood draws and related phlebotomy tasks, including using a centrifuge when needed, in accordance with clinical standards and training.
  • Accurately enter patient and clinical data into the EMR and other electronic health record systems.
  • Collaborate with internal medicine, family medicine, pediatric, and other specialty providers as needed to support comprehensive patient care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by clinic leadership and providers to support smooth clinic operations and patient care.
  • Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and organizational policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.

Essential Skills

  • Active CMA (AAMA), RMA, or CCMA certification.
  • Successful completion and graduation from a recognized medical assistant training course or equivalent experience.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical assisting and direct patient care.
  • Ability to room patients, collect vital signs, and document clinical information accurately.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) or electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Experience with appointment scheduling and basic data entry.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy, including blood draws and use of a centrifuge, in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time during the workday.
  • Upbeat, positive, and outgoing attitude with a willingness to step in and help wherever needed to maintain consistent patient flow and positive patient interactions.
  • Strong communication skills for phone triage, patient education, and coordination with providers and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively in family medicine and hospital-connected clinic settings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2–3 years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in an outpatient or clinic environment.
  • Experience in family practice or women’s health settings.
  • Experience with point-of-care (POC) testing such as urinalysis, strep, flu, and pregnancy tests.
  • Experience using EMR systems in general.
  • BG in internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatric care.
  • Strong team-based mindset and desire to collaborate closely with providers and other office staff.
  • Friendly and professional demeanor with a focus on patient-centered care.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a clinical or healthcare network environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a Family Medicine clinic within a hospital setting in Franklin, working closely with two providers and one other Medical Assistant in a temperature-controlled environment. The team collectively sees a high volume of patients, and the clinic supports approximately 120–150 patients monthly per Medical Assistant depending on walk-ins and scheduled visits. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no weekend work and holidays off. The daily flow typically includes walk-in visits from 8:00 a.m. to 8:50 a.m., scheduled appointments from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., a one-hour lunch break, and afternoon appointments from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with closing and final tasks completed by 5:00 p.m. The clinic offers easy, free access to surface parking with no parking garages or downtown traffic. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.22 - $23.00/hr.
