Job Title: Extruder Operator
Job Description

The Extruder Operator efficiently controls the operation of the extrusion line from raw material input to finished product. This role sets up, operates, and monitors extrusion equipment, ensures product quality and consistency, and follows production schedules to meet customer requirements. The position requires attention to detail, strong mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work safely and effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the extrusion line from raw material input through to finished product, ensuring smooth and efficient production.
  • Set up extrusion equipment, including machine configuration, films and resins, color concentrates and additives, production speeds, and start/stop functions.
  • Perform changeovers, manage downtime, and complete die and screw tear downs, screen pack changes, and use line-specific tools as required.
  • Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures to ensure safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain extruded product to required gauge, length, width, bond strength, color, dyne level, and surface finish, and promptly identify any surface defects.
  • Conduct and document quality control tests, including double checks and data collection, in accordance with current procedures.
  • Transfer accurate production data to daily production log books, quality control documents, and other forms used in the production process.
  • Follow the production schedule and related documents to meet customer orders and adhere to specific instructions.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and warehouse to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by following all safety policies and procedures and promptly reporting unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Uphold and support the company’s quality standards in all aspects of production.
  • Communicate line malfunctions and production issues in a timely manner to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support production and operational goals.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or 1–2 years of relevant experience, or a forklift certification.
  • Ability to operate machinery in a production or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret production tickets and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to work at an accelerated pace while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations and measure using a tape measure or other measuring instruments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to use production-related systems or software.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in processes, quality, and safety.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and bend, stretch, or stand for extended periods of time.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with extrusion processes or machine operation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with films, resins, color concentrates, and additives used in extrusion.
  • Understanding of quality control practices, including data collection and documentation.
  • Comfort working on rotating 12-hour shifts, including day and night shifts.
  • Forklift certification or experience operating material handling equipment.

Work Environment

The work environment is a clean, well-lit manufacturing facility focused on safety, organization, and product quality. The role involves operating extrusion machinery and related equipment on rotating 12-hour shifts, with an initial training period on a Monday–Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. schedule. After training, shifts run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for days and 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for nights. The position is physically active, requiring standing for extended periods, frequent bending and stretching, and lifting up to 50 pounds while working on and around production lines and warehouse areas.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
