This position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work activities related to the repair, maintenance, and upkeep of City streets, alleys, and drainage systems. Operates and maintains Street Department vehicles, heavy road equipment, and specialized street maintenance equipment in support of routine maintenance, seasonal operations, and emergency response activities, while following established safety practices and departmental procedures.

  • Operates street sweepers and other assigned Street Department equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Completed and submits required equipment, vehicle, and activity log sheets on a daily basis in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Maintains assigned equipment, vehicles, tools, materials, facilities, and grounds to ensure safe, clean, and operational working conditions.
  • Performs basic servicing and preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including inspections, lubrication, fueling, and minor adjustments; assists mechanics with repairs as needed.
  • Prepares for and actively participates in snow and ice control operations, including plowing, salting, sanding, and emergency response activities, as required during the winter season.
  • Participates in required on-call duty, including responding to storm events, after-hours callouts, and emergency situations.
  • Assists other City departments with Street Department-related functions, including support for special events, emergency operations, and interdepartmental projects.
  • May serve as a work leader or provide guidance to other employees at the discretion of the Foreman.
  • Maintains a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as required for the operation of assigned equipment.
  • Subject to the Department’s Random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program in accordance with applicable regulations and City policy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, provided such duties do not require professional certification or licensure beyond the scope of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in operating equipment. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures. Ability to perform physical work activities in various weather conditions. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to communicate with City employees.

Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required; six (6) months of laborer experience preferred. Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or have the ability to obtain the required CDL within six (6) months of employment. Employer-paid CDL training and testing may be provided in accordance with a training reimbursement agreement between the City and the employee.

Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 100 pounds and carrying objects weighing 75-100 pounds.

Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions. Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.
