Equipment Mechanic I/II/III

Under varying levels of supervision, the Equipment Mechanic I/II/III performs a wide range of maintenance, diagnostic, and repair work on gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment, including trucks, graders, dozers, and other public works machinery. Responsibilities include inspecting, servicing, and overhauling equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, as well as maintaining accurate records and adhering to preventive maintenance schedules.

As incumbents progress through the series, duties increase in complexity and independence—from performing basic maintenance and assisting with repairs at the entry level to diagnosing complex mechanical issues, completing major overhauls, and providing lead direction and training at the advanced level. This role is essential to maintaining the County’s fleet and supporting critical public services.

They demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow, particularly at the entry level, while more experienced candidates bring advanced diagnostic skills, certifications, and the ability to manage complex repair work with minimal supervision.


Successful candidates are adaptable and resilient, comfortable working in physically demanding and outdoor environments, and committed to following safety practices. At the advanced level, the ideal candidate also demonstrates leadership abilities, including mentoring staff, providing training, and supporting efficient shop operations.


Department Overview

The Fleet Maintenance Division supports the County’s Public Works and other departments by ensuring that vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and operational. The division is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of a diverse fleet that supports road maintenance, emergency response, and essential public services.

Staff work in a dynamic, hands-on environment that requires technical expertise, teamwork, and a strong commitment to safety. The division plays a critical role in minimizing downtime, extending equipment life, and supporting efficient County operations. The Region

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities might be:

Equipment Mechanic I:
Two (2) years of experience as an automotive mechanic.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a driver’s license valid in California.
• Ability to obtain a Class B driver’s license valid in California

Equipment Mechanic II:
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience as an Equipment Mechanic I. ASE Certifications within the Automotive and/or Medium-Heavy Truck Series or equivalent is highly desirable in conjunction with a working knowledge of Heavy Equipment repair and maintenance.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a driver’s license valid in California.
• Possession of certification in at least one area of equipment repair specialty.
• Possession of a Class B driver’s license valid in California.

Equipment Mechanic III:
Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience as an Equipment Mechanic II.
ASE Master Technician Certification in the Automotive and/or Medium-Heavy Truck Series or equivalent is highly desirable in conjunction with an advanced working knowledge of Heavy Equipment repair and maintenance.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a driver’s license valid in California.
• Possession of various certifications towards the Master Mechanic certification or equivalent.
• Possession of a Class B driver’s license valid in California.
