Job Description

The Environmental Technician supports the safe and compliant operation of landfill gas collection and control systems by collecting and documenting environmental data, monitoring landfill gas and liquids, and performing routine and non-routine maintenance on system components. This role involves daily travel to project sites, hands-on field work in varying outdoor conditions, and the use of specialized monitoring equipment to ensure regulatory objectives are met and environmental performance remains in compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all regulatory objectives and due dates are met by properly collecting, documenting, and organizing environmental data.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain Gas Collection and Control Systems (GCCS) at assigned project sites to ensure or restore proper operation and compliance.
  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance on GCCS components, including troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Monitor and analyze landfill gas (LFG) and liquids to support safe and efficient system performance.
  • Monitor and maintain liquids extraction systems within the GCCS to ensure proper operation.
  • Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex GCCS and system performance issues.
  • Respond promptly to GCCS call-out devices and alarms, including after-hours as needed, to address system issues.
  • Operate light equipment and assist with HDPE pipe fusion activities when required.
  • Use environmental monitoring instruments such as flame-ionization detectors, photo-ionization detectors, explosive gas detectors, water level detectors, and pH/temperature/conductivity meters.
  • Apply general gas, soil, and air sampling techniques in accordance with applicable environmental and health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of landfill gas and landfill fluids collection systems and support data collection, processing, and database entry.
  • Create clear and professional business documents, including letters, reports, and memoranda, to communicate findings and system status.
  • Travel daily to job sites, with site locations varying based on project needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support environmental projects and field operations.

Essential Skills

  • At minimum, a high school diploma and at least 1 year of general working experience.
  • Ability to complete the OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour environmental health and safety course and annual 8-hour refresher training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and reliably drive to job sites.
  • Ability to walk long distances over steeply sloped landfills and uneven outdoor terrain.
  • Ability to work safely in extreme hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds on a non-consistent basis.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical system failures in the field.
  • Ability to develop a strong working knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment, including flame-ionization detectors, photo-ionization detectors, explosive gas detectors, water level detectors, and pH/temperature/conductivity meters.
  • Ability to learn and apply general gas, soil, and air sampling techniques in line with environmental and health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to become familiar with operation and maintenance techniques for landfill gas and landfill fluids collection systems.
  • Ability to understand landfill gas data, data processing techniques, and databases.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to create clear, professional business documents such as letters, reports, and memoranda.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Preferred Associate’s (A.S.) or Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in environmental science or other natural sciences such as geology, biology, or ecology.
  • Experience in environmental field work, environmental remediation, or related consulting, testing, monitoring, or maintenance activities.
  • Experience with soil sampling, air monitoring, and environmental field techniques.
  • Knowledge of environmental remediation practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with software tools such as Envision and GEM for environmental data and system management.
  • Light equipment operation experience, with HDPE pipe fusion experience considered a plus.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills for complex field and system issues.
  • Ability to pass a company-paid baseline health physical and drug screening, as required by the role.

Work Environment

The work environment centers on active project sites in the solid waste sector, where you will perform consulting, testing, monitoring, and maintenance activities in outdoor field conditions. Technicians regularly walk long distances over steeply sloped landfill surfaces and uneven terrain and work safely in both hot and cold weather. The role involves daily travel to various job sites, operation of light equipment, and frequent use of environmental monitoring instruments such as gas detectors, water level meters, and pH/temperature/conductivity meters. Work is primarily field-based, supported by office tasks that include data processing and documentation using Microsoft Office tools. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to environmental regulations, and practical, hands-on experience with landfill gas and fluids collection systems.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petaluma, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr.
