Physical Agility Test is scheduled forApril 27, 2026.
This position operates a truck along an assigned route to collect and transport solid waste and recycling.
- Operates Class A and Class B collection vehicles along an assigned route to collect trash, yard waste, and recycling.
- Ensures that all assigned routes are serviced by the end of the day.
- Directs the activities of the collection crew as needed and as directed by the supervisor.
- Picks up and disposes of dead animals.
- Ensures compliance with job safety principles and practices.
- Performs pre- and post-trip equipment inspections and makes minor repairs and adjustments as needed; reports maintenance or repair needs to supervisor.
- Ensures personal protective equipment, two-way radio, caution flags, forks, shovels, and other safety and work equipment are in proper order and located on collection vehicles.
- Performs manual labor as required in the daily collection of solid waste.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Environmental Services Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws, equipment operation guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related equipment operation and solid waste collection duties. Inclement weather conditions and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to operate solid waste collection equipment along an assigned route. Successful performance contributes to the safe, efficient, and effective collection and transport of solid waste.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.
- Graduation from standard senior high school or GED, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
- Eighteen (18) months current and continuous experience as Environmental Services Worker II with the City of Dothan Public Works Department with a fully competent or higher score on the most recent performance appraisal; and
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or higher.
OR
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
- Twelve (12) months experience driving trash/garbage trucks, picking up residential or commercial trash/garbage; and
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or higher.
- Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver license preferred.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid operator driver's license and an acceptable driving record (PBA 09/10/01).
- Employees are required to obtain and maintain a permit for a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 30 days of date of employment/promotion/transfer/demotion to this position. (See condition for details.)
- Employees are required to obtain and maintain Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of date of employment/promotion/transfer/demotion to this position. (See condition for details.)
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).
- Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standard, which includes drug/alcohol testing.
Qualified applicants will be evaluated based on training and experience as documented on their application. This evaluation will comprise 50% of their final grade and the other 50% will be based on the Physical Ability/Agility course/test.
Physical Ability/Agility testing is scheduled for
April 27, 2026. If qualified, an email notification inviting you to self-schedule your slot for the Physical Ability/Agility Examination will go out at a later date. You MUST self-schedule your slot or you will not be allowed to test.
