Job Duties:
Join the Office of the City Surveyor as an Engineering Technician, where you will be part of the Survey Bureau within Public Works Engineering Group. This position will be filled as an Engineering Technician I (G.22, $49,254 - $76,336) or an Engineering Technician II G24 ($54,288 $84,156) based on the qualifications of the selected candidate.*
Job duties will support the Survey Bureau with drafting of Subdivision and Acquisition Plats, Topographic Surveys, and Exhibits; Research public records of properties; Review construction and site plans; Administrative duties to include scanning, filing, and cross referencing completed jobs, weekly upload of timecards, and producing reports.
This individual will perform a variety of drafting and administrative tasks with oversight of a Survey Technician and\or the City Surveyor. Representative work duties include, but are not limited to:
Final drafting of plats and topographic surveys
Processing field collected data.
Review and analyze data for accuracy.
Research of properties plats\deeds.
Minor computations of property lines and boundaries.
Reviewing project and site plans to meet Public Works design standards, Federal, State, and local laws, and ordinances.
File and scan completed jobs.
Data input.
Producing reports.

Minimum Requirements:
Engineering Technician I Minimums: High school or GED plus two (2) years experience in a related field such as civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or planning; demonstrated CADD/GIS/computer experience, or any equivalent combination of experience and formal training that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Engineering Technician II Minimums: High school or GED plus five (5) years’ experience in a field associated with civil engineering, drafting, surveying, or planning; demonstrated CADD/GIS/computer experience, or any equivalent combinations of experience and formal training that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Proficiency in the use of Autodesk Civil 3D
Proficiency in the use of Carlson software
Knowledge of ESRI GIS software
Surveying or Engineering experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Knowledge of HP plotters
Proficiency in the reading of CIP and VDOT plans
Knowledge of DPOR rules and regulations
Knowledge of Municipal Government ordinances, regulations, and standards

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
