The City of Baraboo has an immediate opening and is accepting applications for the full-time position of Engineering Technician in the Engineering Department. Applicants should have an Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field of study and a minimum of one year's experience in a related field. Applicant must have a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: mange the City's GIS system; assist in the survey & construction staking for street, alley & utility reconstruction projects; act as an inspector for all Public Works' projects and provide contract administration services; locate utilities for Digger's Hotline; prepare plans under the direction of the City Engineer; manage the City's annual sidewalk maintenance program; make annual inspections of all storm sewer outfalls; assist Street Superintendent with annual PASER rating of all public streets; and other duties as assigned.
Job requires working outside in adverse weather conditions. Position requires the ability to routinely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds lift and/or move up to 100 pounds occasionally.
The hourly wage rate range for this position is $27.51 to $35.08. The Application deadline is 4:00PM on Friday, April 24, 2026.

Perform routine and complex non-professional engineering work and provide customer assistance to the public. Provide data, research, and maps to aid departments throughout the City. May serve as a member of the Information Technology Workgroup.
Works under the general supervision of the City Engineer. However, position also works closely with Department of Public Works, Water and Sewer Utilities, Parks & Recreation, and Administration.

2. Assist in the survey and layout of construction or other projects.
3. Act as an inspector on Public Works projects.
4. Maintain and file all official map records, (tax parcel, utility, street, etc.)
5. Give general and technical information regarding department activities in response to inquiries both in the Engineering Department and the Assessor's Office.
6. Primary person to input facility maintenance data on to maps and into data bases for streets, sewers, sidewalks, signs parking lots, and other City owned facilities into a GIS system. Creates maps for all departments. Researches and writes legal descriptions. Coordinates with outside contractors. Measures field work for pay requests. Heads sidewalk replacement program in the field. Determines property lines for City work.
7. Locate utilities for Digger Hotline calls to include sanitary, storm, electrical, and fiber.
8. Prepare engineering drawings under the director of the City Engineer.
9. Stake construction as required for the Public Works Department.
10. Installs and maintains all GIS programs.
11. Other duties as apparent or assigned.
Peripheral Duties:
1. Operate a vehicle.
2. Provide backup to related positions.
3. Attend meetings as assigned.
4. Attend periodic safety classes as determined appropriate for the position, i.e. personal protective equipment, excavating and trenching, etc.
5. Assists the public by providing information and maps.
6. Perform additional tasks as required or requested.
Special Requirements:
Understand the importance of safety by attending classes provided by the City through CVMIC and other trained staff because of exposure to accidents that could occur while working in the field.Desired Minimum Qualifications:
1. Specialized knowledge of engineering technician work acquired either through vocational school or through related experience.
2. Working knowledge of surveying and engineering practices and principals.
3. Able to read and write legal descriptions, translating them into graphic map representations.
4. Working knowledge of engineering transit, level, total station, and related surveying tools, personal operating computer systems, GIS systems, GPS Equipment, and AutoCAD/ArcGIS software, and underground utility locators.
5. Able to effectively meet and deal with the public, to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to follow oral and written instructions.
