Job Duties:
Join the Engineering Support Division for an exciting opportunity to be part of the QA/QC team reviewing the CIP infrastructure with the City of Virginia Beach.
The selected candidate will be part of a team of talented engineers working with the QA/QC team in the Engineering Support Division of the City Engineer’s Office. The selected candidate will perform a variety of duties of a complex nature related to reviews of preliminary engineering reports, plans, as-builts, construction cost estimates, specifications, calculations and computations in accordance with the City, State, and Federal standards and specifications and the Public Works Design Standards Manual. Types of projects include, but are not limited to:
Roadway/Highways Improvements
Intersection Improvements
Traffic Signals and Replacements
Sidewalks, Shared Use Paths and Trails
Drainage Improvements, Stormwater Quality Improvements and Stormwater Ponds
Flood Protection Projects and Stormwater Pump Stations
Bridges and Bridge Replacements
Coastal Improvements and Beach Replenishments
Dredging of Channels, Lakes and Stormwater Ponds
Utility Replacements, Improvements and Utility Pump Stations
Parks and Recreation projects
Representative work functions may include, but are not limited to:
Review project plans and studies for various infrastructure related projects, including conceptual design, preliminary engineering reports, geo-technical reports, cost estimate, design calculations and computations, specifications and project manuals.
Oversee consultants performing QA/QC of Public Works CIP projects and coordinate limited QA/QC reviews with other Departments in the City projects affecting Public Works assets.
Prepare project cost estimates
Perform and/or manage engineering studies.
Contact administration to assure City standards are met.

The position may be classified as an Engineer I, Engineer II or Engineer III depending on qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

Minimum Requirements:
Engineer I Minimums: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field, or an Associate’s Degree with six (6) years of progressive experience of engineering level work.
Engineer II Minimums: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field with possession of an E.I.T. (Engineer In Training) Certificate and two (2) years of progressive professional experience.
Engineer III Minimums: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field with possession of a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the Virginia Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) and five (5) years of progressive professional experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

• Bridge design experience
• Highway, roadway, intersection and trails design experience.
• Drainage and stormwater experience.
• Experience in hydrologic and hydraulic stormwater design calculations
• Experience with VDOT/FHWA/AASHTO design standards, specifications, codes, policies and procedures
• Cost estimating and scheduling experience
• Contract administration experience
