As the Emergency Vehicle Technician you will:
  • Perform maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, ambulances, and law enforcement units.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized systems to ensure safe and reliable vehicle operation.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections, including state safety and emissions testing, brake systems, and front-end alignments.
  • Maintain and repair specialized fire equipment systems, such as pups, aerial devices, foam systems and hydraulic components.
  • Upfit and convert vehicles for emergency service use (Fire and Police), ensuring compliance with specifications and operational requirements.
  • Perform road testing and operational checks to verify repairs and ensure equipment is safe and fully functional prior to return to service.
  • Coordinate warranty work and external repairs with vendors and manufacturers to support timely and cost-effective service delivery.
  • Fabricate, weld, and rebuild components and systems as needed to support repairs and extend asset life.
  • Works on-call as scheduled. In emergency conditions, is available to perform repair and relief work. Performs road calls, as assigned
  • Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
  • Stay abreast of, and comply with, all City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director and/or their designee(s).

Formal Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate required.

Relatable Work Experience:

  • At least one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in emergency vehicle preventative maintenance and automobile mechanics required.
  • Municipal or government experience preferred
  • Experience working with a fleet management system (FASTER) preferred
  • Experience working with GPS telematics systems preferred

Training (License and/or Certification):

  • Valid Texas Driver License required
  • Ability to obtain a Texas Class B CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements within 180 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain EVT certifications (up to 15) within the first year; certifications at time of hire preferred.
  • Ability to obtain ASE certifications (T1–T7 and A4, A5, A9) within three (3) years.
  • Ability to obtain required operational licenses within designated timeframes, including:
    • Texas DPS Inspector License and Underground Storage Tank Operator Certification (within 30 days)
    • A/C Refrigerant Certification (within 90 days)
    • Forklift Operator License (within 120 days)
