Our client seeks a professional, dedicated individual with a positive outlook for a Relay Technician opening. This role involves testing, commissioning, calibrating, and maintaining protective relays and related systems in substations, power plants, and industrial environments. The ideal candidate will have experience with electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays and be familiar with industry standards such as IEEE, NETA, and NFPA.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relaying equipment, relaying schemes, DFR equipment, SCADA systems, distribution automation systems, and associated communication equipment.
- Work with electrical engineers to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.
- Perform function testing of substation control circuits on relay panels, transformers, and circuit breaker changeouts.
- Perform end-to-end relay testing using Doble ProTesT software to verify carrier and fiber systems.
- Assist in developing written standard commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relaying, DFRs, RTUs, IEDs, distribution automation, and associated communication systems.
- Manage related projects onsite throughout their duration and effectively interface with and own the relationship with customers and their vendors.
- Test and perform other electrical maintenance activities within the plant environment as directed.
- Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.
Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related field is preferred.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with relay testing and commissioning.
- NETA Level II, III, or IV Certification is preferred.
- Experience with relay software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, ABB PCM).
- OSHA 10/30 and NFPA 70E training.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of protection schemes for transmission, distribution, and generation.
- Proficiency in using relay test sets (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Manta).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and relay logic.
- Familiarity with NETA standards and testing procedures.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and periodic, unannounced random drug tests.
- Must complete a satisfactory criminal background check.
- Must be available to work regular overtime.
- Must be able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, drive regularly, and fly domestically, with or without reasonable accommodations. Must be able to pass a fit-for-duty physical exam.
- Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
- Willingness to travel.
