Early Childhood Assistant Teacher

The Early Childhood Assistant Teacher is responsible for the supervision, care and education of a group of children. The Assistant Teacher works in partnerships to implement the curriculum through lesson planning, room arrangement, child observation and assessments and parent communication.

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  1. Facilitate and support children’s participation in experiences and activities of the planned curriculum
  2. Interact with children to support their development and learning
  3. Support the implementation of guidance strategies used in the program
  4. Implement health, safety and nutritional plans for individual children
  5. Record Keeping


The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities:

  1. Communicate effectively with children and adults
  2. Serve as a model for children through own conduct
  3. Basic knowledge of children development and developmentally appropriate activities and ongoing participation in professional development as required
  1. Education and Experience: Candidate must meet one of the following qualifications:
    • At least a high school diploma or its equivalent and successful completion of TECE 1 (Training for Early Care and Education 1) AND six months of experience working with children preschool age or younger in a group setting; or
    • At least a high school diploma with successful completion of the traditional high school’s career pathway program in early childhood as recognized by the Office of Child Care Licensing AND six months of experience working with children preschool age or younger in a group setting; or
    • At least a high school diploma or its equivalent and successful completion of six college credits- three in early childhood education and three in child development AND six months of experience working with children preschool age or younger in a group setting.
  2. Candidate must be at least eighteen years of age

  2. Demonstrate knowledge to create age and developmentally appropriate environments
  3. Ability to understand how young children develop and learn
  4. Promote the development of social competence
