Job Description

We are currently seekingEntry-Level Distribution Engineersto support electric power distribution infrastructure upgrades and storm hardening projects across Florida. Initial assignments will support Duke Energy, with additional future projects for Florida Power & Light (FP&L), TECO, and other utility clients.

This is an excellent opportunity for recent engineering graduates looking to begin a career in electric utility distribution design and gain hands-on experience on large-scale infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations and design for the replacement of deteriorating cable and aging poles in electric distribution systems.
  • Support the conversion of overhead distribution lines to underground configurations, including associated design and documentation.
  • Execute reconductoring projects for existing distribution lines to improve reliability and capacity.
  • Conduct structural analysis of poles, including evaluation of loading, guying requirements, and pole load calculations.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and coordination of protective devices.
  • Apply basic engineering theories and principles to solve distribution design problems and develop practical design solutions.
  • Use design software packages and CAD tools (such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Bentley Open Utility Designer) to produce accurate and compliant distribution design drawings.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and develop sound recommendations to support project decisions.
  • Prepare and present technical recommendations and design options clearly to project stakeholders and team members.
  • Follow applicable utility standards, design criteria, and quality control processes to ensure accurate and compliant designs.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and project team members in a highly interactive office environment.
  • Communicate frequently and professionally with customers and, as needed, with developers and other external stakeholders regarding distribution projects.
  • Support long-term power distribution programs for major utilities, contributing to storm hardening and system reliability improvements.
  • Participate in extensive on-the-job training and actively seek opportunities to learn new tools, standards, and engineering practices.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and initiative in managing daily tasks and project responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil) from a 4-year ABET-accredited college or university
  • OR at least 2 years of experience in distribution design.
  • Basic knowledge of concepts in the electric utility industry, including primary and secondary distribution systems and utility standards.
  • Ability to use design software packages and general CAD tools for distribution design work.
  • General construction knowledge and aptitude relevant to power distribution projects.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles and how they apply to distribution system design.
  • Ability to research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations.
  • Capability to prepare and present technical recommendations clearly and professionally.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate frequently with customers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • High level of self-motivation, initiative, and a demonstrated desire to learn and grow in the role.
  • Proficiency or familiarity with CAD and design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, and general drafting software.
  • Ability to perform or learn to perform structural analysis of poles, guying calculations, and other distribution engineering calculations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Leadership and customer interaction experience in other industries such as retail or restaurant environments.
  • Experience performing distribution design work on the Duke Energy system.
  • Experience interacting with customers and developers on distribution projects.
  • Knowledge of BOUD, Maximo, Smallworld, and Bentley Open Utility Designer.
  • Experience with quality control processes in engineering or design (QC and quality control practices).
  • Passed the Engineering Fundamentals Exam (EIT) or actively pursuing EIT certification.
  • Familiarity with power distribution design concepts, including protective device coordination and fault current analysis.
  • Experience with drafting and CAD tools used in utility design environments.
  • Interest in pursuing a Professional Engineer (PE) license and working under multiple PEs for mentorship and development.

Work Environment

Work takes place primarily in a collaborative office setting in Maitland, Florida. The team includes approximately 50-60 professionals (Engineers, Designers, Drafters, Field Techs, PMs). Enviroment is very collaborative, working closely with other engineers, designers, and project staff using tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Open Utility Designer, BOUD, Smallworld, and Maximo to support large, long-term power distribution programs for major utilities. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Orlando, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
