About the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS):
The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations, including a central museum based in Indianapolis. Role Overview:

The Director of K–12 Education provides strategic leadership for all K–12 school, youth, and outreach initiatives. In this role, you will oversee the development, execution, promotion, and evaluation of programs designed for K–12 audiences, including school workshops, outreach experiences, assemblies, out‑of‑school programming, scout activities, and seasonal or year‑round camps. You will guide curriculum development and support the implementation of school‑age camp programming throughout the year. A central responsibility of this position is cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with educators, families, and community partners to strengthen engagement and expand the museum’s educational impact.

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $65,000 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, manage, and facilitate K–12 educational programs, including school workshops, outreach initiatives, assemblies, special events, and online learning resources.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with school administrators, K–12 educators, parent organizations, homeschool families, scout groups, and camp communities.
  • Oversee curriculum development, staff scheduling, and program facilitation for school, youth, and camp audiences.
  • Lead the review, evaluation, and continuous improvement of in‑school, out‑of‑school, and general youth programs.
  • Respond to inquiries and scheduling requests; assign staff and coordinate logistics for school reservations and events.
  • Develop educational content that aligns with K–12 standards, changing exhibitions, and core galleries, ensuring alignment with institutional strategic priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Interpretation and Director of Visitor Services to enhance field trip logistics and experiences.
  • Recruit, coordinate, and facilitate the Educator Roundtable.
  • Supervise the School and Youth Program Manager, OST Program Manager, and Camp Program Manager, providing support in curriculum development, operations, and program implementation.
  • Partner with the Vice President of Education and Engagement and Engagement Leadership to establish and execute strategic goals, objectives, and action plans for K–12 programming.
  • Create and manage the annual K–12 education program schedule.
  • Develop evaluation tools and strategies; analyze results and lead data‑driven improvements to school services.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to design and implement marketing and sales strategies for K–12 programs.
  • Review and provide feedback on educator resources hosted on the ISMHS website.
  • Provide content for monthly educator e‑newsletters.
  • Support the Development team with grant narratives, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Manage and track the K–12 Education budget and assist with related departmental budgets.
  • Foster strong local, regional, and national networks with peers in education and related fields.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours that may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

Credentials:

  • Bachelors degree preferred or relevant work experience; 5+ years of experience preferred.
  • Prefer experience working with youth in a formal or informal educational setting.

Additional qualifications:

  • Strong public speaking skills and able to show enthusiasm while working with youth and adults.
  • Excellent project management, communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, long program days during camp season and some weekends.
  • Experience with Altru or similar program registration platform is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to work and communicate needs and information to other departments.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with ADA compliance rules and procedures and awareness of cultural sensitivity issues.
  • Have a current Indiana driving license.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
