Job Type: Full-Time | Combination of remote, in-office (Portland), and on-site throughout Maine
Compensation: Competitive salary + performance-based bonus tied to project and company outcomes
Dooryard is a Maine-based real estate company operating across three integrated divisions: Dooryard Construction, Dooryard Development, and Dooryard Management (property management). Each division works in close coordination, sharing the same mission, building, improving, and stewarding quality housing throughout Maine.
Dooryard Construction is the building arm of the organization. We work across both modular and stick-built construction, leveraging a catalog of locally inspired home designs to efficiently deliver projects that align with the character of Maine’s towns and neighborhoods. Our work is centered on infill development and small- to mid-scale projects, with a strong emphasis on attainable and workforce housing. We partner with local municipalities, manufacturers, and subcontractors to bring projects from concept through construction.
Dooryard operates as a small, highly collaborative team and is in an active growth phase. We are expanding our project pipeline and scaling our construction capabilities, creating real opportunities for team members to take on meaningful responsibility and help shape the future of the company.
Role Overview
Dooryard Construction is seeking a Director of Construction to lead project execution and support the growth of our construction operations. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines field-level project management with strategic oversight of estimating, subcontractor procurement, budgeting, and team development.
The right person for this role is equally comfortable on a job site and in a preconstruction meeting, someone who takes full ownership of project outcomes and brings the discipline and proactivity to keep multiple projects moving simultaneously. This is a high-impact position with direct influence on how Dooryard scales its construction capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Preconstruction
• Develop construction pricing and estimates for internal and client projects
• Participate in preconstruction planning, including design coordination, constructability review, and value engineering
• Solicit, level, and manage subcontractor bids across all trades
• Procure materials and manage purchasing for projects
Project Management & Execution
• Oversee projects from preconstruction through closeout
• Own overall project performance, schedule creation, schedule adherence, cost control, and quality of execution across all projects
• Provide on-site leadership and coordination, ensuring subcontractors and employees are aligned with schedule, scope, and quality expectations
• Track costs, manage change orders, and ensure project profitability
• Identify risks early and proactively solve project and operational challenges
Finance & Compliance
• Coordinate with accounting and operations on contracts, requisitions, and payments
• Ensure compliance with MaineHousing requirements and other regulatory obligations
• Support draw requests, lender reporting, and requisition packages as needed
Team & Subcontractor Development
• Build and manage subcontractor relationships across all trades (electricians, plumbers, framers, etc.)
• Support hiring and scaling of the construction team and subcontractor network
• Mentor and develop field staff as the team grows
Qualifications
Required
• 7+ years of experience in construction management or general contracting
• Strong experience in estimating, budgeting, and subcontractor management
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Familiarity with AIA construction contracts and cost tracking
• Proficiency in Excel and construction budgeting/tracking tools
• Highly organized, proactive, and solutions-oriented
• Ability to operate effectively both in the field and at a strategic level
Preferred
• Experience with modular construction
• Familiarity with structural and/or civil engineering
• Experience with infill or neighborhood-scale residential projects
• Familiarity with Maine’s permitting and code landscape
• Experience with affordable housing, workforce housing, or public funding programs (e.g., MaineHousing, LIHTC)
What We’re Looking For
This role is ideal for a construction professional who is ready to step into a leadership position at a growing company, someone who wants to build something, not just manage it. You’ll have real autonomy, real accountability, and a direct seat at the table as Dooryard scales. If you’re energized by complex projects, tight-knit teams, and the mission of delivering quality housing in Maine, this is the opportunity.
