Director, IS Business Operations & Performance

Pay Range: $70/hour to $110/hour

$175k-210k Salary

This is not an infrastructure-focused role. Think of it more as a Chief of Staff or Chief Operating Officer type of position within IS. Has authority, while doing mostly administrative functions. They will have a clear high level understanding of the entire IS department. This person will oversee IS operations, financials, performance review tracking, the internship program, and vendor management.

Internship Program

This is the one area where the person will have a true direct report: the Manager of the Internship Program. There are typically 15–30 part-time interns at any given time who report into that manager. Keck wants a director-level leader above the manager to oversee the overall structure, effectiveness, and performance of the program.

IS Financials

This is a major component of the role. This person will work with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) — including the CTO, CISO, Associate Administrators, VPs, and Directors — to ensure budgets are submitted, reviewed, and accurate.

A large part of this involves headcount planning for both full-time employees and contractors. They need someone who understands budgeting logic. For example, if a $100K position will be filled mid-year, only $50K should be allocated in that year’s budget.

This person will also consolidate financial requests into a master spreadsheet and work closely with the CIO to revise and finalize it.

Vendor Management

This is mostly around staffing vendors — ensuring MSAs are in place and tracking which vendors should be added or removed.

There are also non-staffing vendors, although those are typically managed directly by the relevant ELT leader. Even so, this person should track who those vendors are, maintain copies of the MSAs, and understand pricing. Xerox is one example, as they handle printers and ink cartridges, though that relationship is managed by the CTO and his team.

From time to time, there may also be consulting firms involved in projects that the CIO oversees. This person should have visibility into those relationships as well.

Performance Reviews

This person will own the performance review process, but they will not be the one conducting the reviews themselves. They will be responsible for following up with the ELT to ensure reviews are completed on time and properly tracked for every employee in the IS/IST department.

They may also assist TJ, the CIO, with performance reviews for his direct reports, which includes members of the ELT. However, the CIO remains the final decision-maker and the person who ultimately delivers and finalizes those reviews.

Process Improvement

This person will also evaluate the IS organization as a whole and make recommendations for process improvements across the department.

IS Operations Administrative Team

Currently, the IS Operations Administrative team (9 people) reports to Sherry. That is not changing right now, but this team may eventually roll under the Director of IS Business Operations in the future.
