Job Summary and Responsibilities

The incumbent is a member of the healthcare team who is accountable for patient care supportive services for a care team/unit(s) under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Department aide provides a variety of cleaning and support functions to maintain the department and equipment in a functional sanitary condition. May have access to or be required to distribute drugs, needles, or syringes from storage locations (such as large stock supplies, automated dispensing units, and other carts) to/within patient care areas or treatment carts as defined by hospital policy/procedure.

As a Department Aide, you will serve as a vital member of the healthcare team, providing essential patient care supportive services under direct RN supervision. Your accountability ensures efficient patient care.

Every day you will perform tasks including assisting with patient mobility, maintaining patient environments, and managing supplies. You may also access and distribute drugs or medical supplies per hospital policy.

  • Technical Skills: Is competent in psychomotor skills and technical procedures within scope of practice. Includes maintaining/stocking all unit supplies/equipment in procedure rooms; patient care assisting with admission of patient: changing into gowns, paperwork, disposition of belongings, attaching/removing monitors; obtaining supplies/equipment; moving /transporting/positioning/escorting patients; set-up of room and cart per physician preference cards; cleans rooms/equipment/instruments/following procedures; terminal room cleaning; demonstrates understanding of aseptic technique in patient care and handling of equipment/specimens; demonstrates competency in aseptic technique to assist with room set-up; and responds appropriately in emergency situations. Identifies appropriate patient care requirements relative to procedures being performed. Participates in proper identification of patient, procedure, and site. Takes initiative to assist co-workers in completing workload and improving work environment. Completes additional projects as assigned by supervisor. Implements plan of care as directed by Registered Nurse.
  • Documentation: Performs legible, timely, concise and accurate documentation according to policies and procedures. Includes specimen requisition slips and specimen labeling as required by lab. Proficient and competent with the computerized documentation system. Performs and documents quality control checks as assigned.
  • Organizational Skills: Uses appropriate organization, priority setting and problem solving skills.
  • Self Development: Is accountable for self-directed learning and participation in continuing education to meet own professional development.
  • Patient Safety: Applies safety precautions and principles to patient care. Includes all applicable National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Precepting/ Mentoring: Participates in orientation of new staff, ancillary personnel. Serves as resource to staff from other departments.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in the OR setting (EVS, transport, SPD). Directly comparable experience may beconsidered.
  • High School GED General Studies.
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association.


Preferred

  • Associates Other Health Science orrelated curriculum.
  • One (1) year CNA/nurse assistance/care giver experience
