GENOMES2VETERANS (G2V) RESEARCH PROGRAM Boston VA Research Institute

Clinical Research Data Manager

Department: Genomes2Veterans (G2V) / All of Us Research Program |Status: Full-Time | Location: VA Boston Healthcare System, MA

About the Program

The Genomes2Veterans (G2V) Research Program is a nationally recognized precision genomic medicine research team embedded within the VA Boston Healthcare System. Our mission is to conduct ground-breaking observational and clinical trial research exploring the role of genomics in improving the health and healthcare of Veterans. One of our flagship projects is the All of Us Research Program — a multi-agency federal initiative examining the intersection of human genes, lifestyle, and environment to revolutionize individualized healthcare.

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Research Data Manager to serve as the program’s database and data workflow expert. This is a pivotal role: the person we hire will own the architecture, integrity, and usability of the data infrastructure that powers our research. If you are the kind of data professional who translates a clinical research question into a clean, well-documented database — and who holds that database to a high standard over time — this role is for you.

Who You Are

  • Database Expert & SQL Specialist (Required): Your primary technical identity is SQL. You bring 5+ years of hands-on experience designing relational databases, writing complex queries, building stored procedures, and developing standard and custom reports (e.g., SQL Server Reporting Services / SSRS). You understand ETL workflows, data normalization, and quality assurance practices — particularly in contexts involving Electronic Health Records (EHR). You are the person other team members turn to when data needs to be structured, cleaned, and made reliable.
  • Clinical Research Data Manager: You understand that data management in a research context is different from production software engineering. You have direct experience supporting observational studies, clinical trials, or equivalent research programs, and you understand how study design shapes the data you collect, manage, and report. You have demonstrated ability to translate an abstract clinical or research question into a concrete, maintainable data workflow and dataset.
  • Systems-Minded & Architecturally Aware: You think in terms of data architecture, data flows, and system interoperability. You can integrate data from multiple sources and formats — including VA administrative data, EHR data, and OMOP-structured datasets — into coherent, usable data assets. You document what you build so that your solutions outlast the moment.
  • Clear & Confident Communicator: You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical collaborators, including researchers, statisticians, IT teams, and program leadership. You are skilled at documenting decisions, data definitions, and workflows. You ask the right questions early so that problems are defined before they become expensive to fix.
  • Technically Adaptable (Nice to Have): Experience with SAS, R, Python, Google Cloud tools (GSutil), Linux, or SharePoint is welcomed and helpful, but not the primary driver of this hire. We are first and foremost hiring a data manager and SQL/database expert. Additional technical skills can be developed on the job.
  • Problem Solver & High Standards Holder: You anticipate data quality issues before they surface in analysis. You design durable solutions, build in validation, and maintain high standards for reproducibility and maintainability across all workflows. You do not consider a dataset “done” until it is accurate, documented, and accessible to those who need it.
  • Collaborative Team Member: You are comfortable as an integral member of a nimble, cross-functional team. You work effectively with data analysts, developers, statisticians, project managers, and investigators. You are capable of supervising one or more data analysts and are invested in their development.
  • Compliant & Trustworthy: You operate with complete confidentiality and ensure full adherence to study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) standards, and Health Research Protection Program (HRPP) rules, policies, and procedures.

What You’ll Do

Your core responsibility is to be the program’s database and data management authority — from design through delivery. Specifically, you will:

  • Serve as the program’s primary SQL and relational database expert: design, build, maintain, and document databases and queries that support clinical research operations.
  • Translate clinical research questions and study eligibility criteria into concrete data workflows, cohort-building logic, and participant databases — with clear documentation of assumptions and methodology.
  • Develop and maintain automated workflows for selecting, cleaning, vetting, and preparing participant lists and operational datasets; build in validation checkpoints and quality assurance steps.
  • Design and maintain standard and custom research reports (SQL/SSRS) to meet the evolving needs of the program.
  • Manage workflows for sharing OMOP-formatted data with program partners, including VA informatics teams and national collaborators (utilizing SQL, Google Cloud utilities, and other tools as appropriate).
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert on EHR data structure, OMOP data organization, data quality standards, and system architecture relevant to program operations.
  • Act as the central program contact for data requirements: coordinate with VA informatics, IT, and data teams internally, and with national program partners.
  • Oversee user permissions, data access authorizations, and adherence to local and federal data governance standards.
  • Produce required government and program reports on schedule.
  • Support manuscript preparation, presentations, and external reporting by delivering clean, reliable, well-documented datasets and clear data summaries.
  • Represent the G2V program in local and national groups related to program data.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with research, informatics, and operational partners

The employee must be a resident of Massachusetts upon start date.

Please note we are unable to provide work authorization and/or visa sponsorship.
