Dance Instructor positions organize and instruct dance activities at various locations throughout the City of San Diego; teach tap, jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop or musical theater dance to a variety of age groups at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels; may be required to organize, choreograph, costume and direct a dance program; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Dance Instructor positions are available on a part-time and/or limited-hourly basis and may average up to 19 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours. During recitals season, special events, and summer. Hours are generally increased.
  • Dance Instructor positions work assignments will be at recreation centers citywide and Balboa Park facilities. Most dance classes are scheduled on weekdays between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
  • Dance Instructor positions may require bilingual skills for which they may receive additional pay.
  • In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Dance Instructor positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

AGE: 16 years of age or older.

NOTES:
  • Applicants less than age 18 must obtain a work permit prior to starting work.
  • Work permits may be obtained through the school system.
  • Applicants who are age 17 and are high school graduates, or have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) or General Education Development (GED) examination, are not required to have a work permit; however, they must submit a copy of their high school diploma, CHSPE or GED results with their application.
EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Experience teaching or receiving instruction in at least ONE of the following types of dance: Tap, jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop or musical theater dance. Some experience or instruction MUST be at the advanced level so the applicant will have the knowledge and skills needed to teach dance to others.

NOTES:
  • Applicants will be considered for vacancies in each type of dance based on experience and/or advanced level of instruction.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
