SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Operate all cranes and support equipment in a productive and safe manner. Perform crane lifts and handle various cargoes for vessels that call on the Port of Morehead City. Responsible for performing all maintenance on cranes and support equipment for the Morehead City crane department.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
  • Operate container, gantry, and mobile cranes with associated support equipment, including buckets, hoppers, and rigging gear
  • Conduct mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on cranes and crane support equipment when needed (oil changes, cable changes, servicing of hydraulic systems, etc.)
  • Responsible for rigging crane gear to safely and effectively move cargo
  • Support outside contractors on repairs to crane equipment
  • Conduct safety inspections on crane equipment
  • Clean and maintain crane department tools, equipment, and work area
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures to ensure cargo is handled in a safe manner
  • Complete work orders as assigned
  • Assist with welding and fabricating as required
  • Assist Crane Supervisor in record keeping for logbooks, work orders, etc.
  • Assist other departments and operate heavy equipment as needed in support of operations, including forklifts and yard trucks
  • Aid the Wilmington Crane Department when additional operators are required
  • All other duties as assigned by management

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Prior crane operation and crane rigging experience is preferred
  • Background in diesel mechanical operation is preferred
  • Must be familiar with crane hand signal code and must comply with all safety rules and regulations
  • Must be able to respond easily to verbal and written instructions
  • Must be able to operate all port cranes at an acceptable level for vessel operations within 12 months
  • Position requires shift work, overtime, and a variable work schedule to include weekends and holidays
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Working time will be spent approximately equally between indoors and outdoors; must be physically able to withstand extreme cold or extreme heat for periods of more than one hour. Frequent exposure to inclement weather, loud noises from machinery, and machinery in operation. Individual may be exposed to fumes/odors from products that are handled at the port. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time during crane operations. Must be able to lift to 50 pounds unassisted, tolerate and work at heights up to 250 feet, and work 12 to 16-hour shifts.
