CALL FOR APPLICANTS COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING DUTCHESS AND ULSTER ARTS CAMP SUMMER 2026 POUGHKEEPSIE & NEW PALTZ, NEW YORK The Art Effect empowers youth to develop their artistic voice to shape their futures and bring about positive social change. We help youth in the Hudson Valley explore, experience, and excel in the arts, introducing them to visual arts and media, allowing them to develop real skills in these fields, and guiding them toward achieving their academic and career goals. The Art Effect seeks enthusiastic young people interested in working with young children, in the visual arts and arts education to be Counselors-In-Training (CITs) at Dutchess Arts Camp in Poughkeepsie, NY , and Ulster Arts Camp in New Paltz, NY . These programs provide weekly, themed, summer sessions for ages 5 – 11 where children can explore their artistic abilities and express themselves through creative group and individual activities. Dutchess and Ulster Arts Camp Counselors-In-Training (CITs) help with supervising a group of around 12 youth ranging from 5-11 years old during recreation times and arts classes; assist with program preparation and clean-up; serve as positive role models for young children and help to create a supportive community. CITs gain crucial practice, under the mentorship and support of an experienced program staff, to set them up for future roles as Counselors in a variety of settings. Successful candidates will have an upbeat, cheerful, supportive approach to working with children as well as collaborating with teaching artists and other program staff. Note: CITs must be at-least 14 years old. Scope of work: Dutchess Arts Camp takes place at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY, from June 29th to July 24th. Ulster Arts Camp takes place on the SUNY New Paltz campus in New Paltz, NY from July 27th to August 14th. These programs run from 9 am-4 pm, Monday through Friday, plus orientation and training. Compensation: CITs earn a stipend of $120/week Counselor-In-Training duties include but are not limited to: ● Collaborate with the Director of Dutchess/ Ulster Arts Camp, Counselors and Teaching Artists to support student safety ● Assist assigned student group through the course of the day ● Support the teaching of lessons using a variety of art equipment, tools, principals, materials, and techniques; ● Supervise students through multi-step arts projects, recess and lunch ● Engage with students and use appropriate strategies to encourage positive interactions; ● Timely submission of all program documents related to this position, including but not limited to incident reports, attendance, and student roster info; ● Clean up of classroom studio space, ensuring the proper care of all areas, equipment, and materials; ● Attend all required trainings and promptly respond to direct communications and meeting scheduling requests; ● Facilitate the regular documentation of student work and classroom activities; ● Other tasks as needed.
