Job Title: Construction Materials Technician
Job Description

The Construction Materials Technician will support construction projects by performing quality assurance and quality control testing on concrete, soils, and aggregates for commercial construction sites. This entry-level role offers hands-on experience in both field and laboratory environments, with comprehensive training provided in industry-standard testing methods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform QA/QC testing on construction materials, including concrete, soils, and aggregates for commercial construction projects.
  • Conduct field tests on freshly placed concrete, including slump, air content, compression test specimen preparation, and temperature measurements.
  • Perform soil and aggregate testing, including density tests, proctors, Atterberg limits, and other standard laboratory procedures.
  • Work on active commercial construction sites to obtain material samples at the time of placement or as specified by project requirements.
  • Carry out laboratory testing on collected samples in accordance with applicable standards and project specifications.
  • Accurately record test data, observations, and results in field and lab reports, ensuring completeness and clarity.
  • Follow established testing procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols at all times, both in the field and in the lab.
  • Communicate test findings and any notable issues to project personnel or supervisors in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain testing equipment, tools, and work areas in clean, calibrated, and proper working condition.
  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule to be present on site when concrete is being poured or when testing services are required.
Essential Skills
  • Basic knowledge of construction practices and terminology.
  • Comfort working outdoors on active commercial construction sites in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn and follow standardized testing procedures for concrete, soils, and aggregates.
  • Strong attention to detail when performing tests and documenting results.
  • Ability to work safely in field and laboratory environments, following all safety guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with field personnel and team members.
  • Reliability and flexibility to adjust work hours based on project needs, including early mornings or evenings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience testing construction materials such as concrete, soils, or aggregates is preferred.
  • ACI Level I Concrete Field Testing Technician certification is preferred.
  • Experience with concrete inspection or concrete testing is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with construction materials testing concepts and procedures is beneficial.
Work Environment

This role operates within a small local office that is part of a larger national organization. The technician will divide time between commercial construction sites and a materials testing laboratory. Work on job sites involves exposure to outdoor conditions and active construction activities, while lab work takes place in a controlled indoor environment with testing equipment and materials. The schedule requires flexibility, as technicians must be available when concrete is being poured, which may include very early morning or evening hours, particularly in the summer. Appropriate field and lab attire, including required safety gear, is necessary to perform the job safely and effectively.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
