About the Work Unit
The purpose of the work unit is to plan, design, and administer construction projects assigned. This includes a wide range of activities that span from planning through project development, advertisement, and construction to completion These activities support all of the "investment categories" fort he Mission of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

About the Position
With guidance from the supervisor: This inspector/tester position supports the Residency and is a component in the Program Area's mission to deliver high quality projects and project documentation. The inspector/tester's primary responsibilities are to perform inspections of and materials testing on construction projects and to ensure the materials and other documentation for Residency projects, for which they are assigned, are are accurate and complete when submitted to the Finals Administrator. This position works under the supervision of a licensed engineer.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Inspect contractor’s work procedures by being on site and being familiar with plans and specifications.
  • Check inspection reports for description of contractors’ work, calculations, and accuracy.
  • Complete the inspection classes, Traffic control, erosion control, and other technical classes required for the construction inspection.
  • Document and certify that the contractor’s work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications.
  • Monitor documentation during the project life and complete final documentation before sending off for final closeout.
  • Assist the project engineer with duties as assigned.
  • Function as project tester on assigned construction projects, typically of low complexity, fill-in for other testers who are taking leave, and assist testers with additional support as needed.
  • Check inspection reports submitted by others for description of contractors’ work, calculations, and accuracy.
  • Service, purchase, and inventory inspection/survey equipment used in the Residency.
  • Order supplies needed for office/field inspection/survey needs.
  • Review and check the accuracy of highway construction project plans and specifications prior to the advertisement for bid of the project.
  • Attend scoping, field inspection reviews, and final office reviews.
  • Make plan recommendations based on field experience, engineering judgment and consultation with the Project Engineer while considering construction phasing and constructability of the project.
  • Required to drive to various project sites and region office locations as needed for plan review meetings.


Work Environment<>

  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.

  • This position may be expected to remain or return to their worksite when responding to emergency situations.

  • Approximately 70% spent in the field, 30% spent in the office, occasional evening, night, and weekend work.

  • Travel required during work hours throughout Region 3.

  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

  • May exert up to 100lbs of force occasionally, and or up to 20 lbs of force frequently.

  • May be exposed to hazardous materials.
  • Required to work in all weather conditions, including exposure to cold and heat, as well as working near heavy traffic

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Five (5) years of experience in anycombination of the following: assisting in the design of construction plans or monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.
Substitution
  • Completion of engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management or other relevant coursework may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

    • Colorado Asphalt Paving Association (CAPA) LabCat Level A Laydown, Level B Plant Materials Control, and Radiological Safety and Nuclear Gauge Operation, Or

    • American Concrete Inspection (ACI) Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician, Or

    • Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC).

  • Shift work

  • Familiarity and knowledge ofASTM, AASHTO, and the CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOTtesting procedures;
  • Knowledge ofAMRL/CCRL proficiency samples testing or certifications;

  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;
