What We're Looking For:
Michael Baker is seeking a Construction Inspector to work in Herndon, VA! The Construction Inspector will responsible for inspecting all phases of highway construction and maintenance projects under the general supervision of senior or supervisory staff. This role ensures construction quality, contract compliance, and adherence to approved plans and specifications to support the delivery of a safe and reliable transportation system for the traveling public.
What You'll Do:
- Inspect and monitor roadway, structure, and bridge construction and maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity under the direction of a Construction Manager or designee
- Ensure contractor compliance with contract documents, plans, specifications, and quality control requirements
- Inspect and monitor field activities including excavations, drainage facilities, road surfaces, and structures
- Observe and document contractor daily production rates and construction activities
- Coordinate work schedules and inspection phases with contractor superintendents and agency personnel
- Identify, document, and communicate non‑compliant work and verify completion of all project elements
- Take field measurements and verify quantities for pay items
- Review placement of construction materials and perform required materials testing
- Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment
- Oversee and enforce installation of erosion and sediment control measures, work zones, and traffic control devices in accordance with standards
- Maintain accurate project documentation including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as‑built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates
What You Need to Succeed:
- Minimum of three (3) years of highway construction inspection experience
- Working knowledge of:
- Roadway, structure, and bridge construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation methods, materials, standards, and specifications
- VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
- Construction plans, symbols, and terminology
- State and federal environmental, safety, and EEO regulations
- Department contract management software
- Mathematics including algebra and geometry
- Required Certifications: Erosion and Sediment Control (DEQ); Asphalt I & II; ACI; Soils and Aggregate; Pavement Markings; Nuclear Safety; and Guardrail (GRIT)
COMPENSATION
The approximate compensation range for this position is $34/hr - $41/hr. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
