Job Description

The Construction Engineering Inspector, also known as a Construction Services Specialist, oversees and reviews the construction process directly from the field to ensure that all work complies with approved engineering plans and specifications. This role focuses on infrastructure projects for municipalities and public utilities, including wastewater treatment plants, stormwater systems, drinking water treatment plants, pump stations, roadway utilities, and underground infrastructure for water supply, water treatment, wellfields, and water distribution systems. The position offers the opportunity to develop both field and office construction engineering skills while working on specialized infrastructure projects with strong long-term growth potential into project management or design engineering roles.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and inspect construction activities on project sites to verify compliance with engineering plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Document construction activities thoroughly from the field, including daily observations, test results, and inspection findings.
  • Collect, maintain, and organize construction documentation, reports, and records to support project tracking and compliance.
  • Review engineering and construction plans and documents prior to and during construction to understand project scope and requirements.
  • Conduct onsite reviews of construction project sites to confirm that materials, methods, and workmanship align with approved plans and specifications.
  • Collaborate with clients on project sites to maintain strong working relationships and support project goals.
  • Communicate regularly with contractors and subcontractors to clarify design intent, resolve issues, and coordinate construction activities.
  • Verify the accuracy of design plans and details at project sites and identify any discrepancies or conflicts.
  • Propose improvements or recommend alterations to construction methods or details when necessary during construction, in consultation with the project team.
  • Consult with contractors and engineers regarding construction activities, construction reports, engineering designs, and field conditions.
  • Review changes in construction methods and material specifications that arise during project construction and assess their impact on design and performance.
  • Provide technical assistance and expertise on construction projects related to reports, inspections, tests, and other engineering records.
  • Support soil testing, utility installation, and other field testing or inspection tasks associated with sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of projects for municipalities and public utilities, including wastewater treatment, water treatment, stormwater, and roadway utility systems.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction inspection or construction observation, or experience as a civil engineering technician.
  • Hands-on field experience supporting construction engineering or civil engineering projects.
  • Experience reviewing construction plans and documentation for infrastructure construction projects, such as water, wastewater, stormwater, or utility systems.
  • Strong understanding of construction engineering principles and civil engineering construction practices.
  • Ability to perform detailed construction inspection and observation, including verification of materials, methods, and workmanship.
  • Familiarity with documentation processes for construction projects, including organizing and maintaining inspection reports and records.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with contractors, subcontractors, engineers, and clients on project sites.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel to and between construction project sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline from an ABET-accredited college.
  • Direct experience as a Construction Inspector, Construction Observer, Construction Engineer, or Civil Engineering Technician (or a closely related role).
  • Experience working on projects involving wastewater treatment plants, drinking water treatment plants, water systems, or pump stations.
  • Exposure to stormwater and storm sewer systems, sanitary sewer systems, and municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with soil testing and related field testing procedures on construction sites.
  • Ability to interpret and apply construction and engineering specifications for municipal and public utility projects.
  • Interest in developing toward project management or design engineering responsibilities over the long term.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing construction documentation and engineering records.
Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based with a mix of on-site construction inspection and office-based documentation work. You will spend a significant portion of your time on active outdoor construction sites, working alongside various contractors and project stakeholders in conditions that can include uneven terrain, noise, and changing weather. Projects are located in and around Fort Wayne, Indiana, and involve municipal and public utility infrastructure such as water and wastewater treatment facilities, stormwater systems, pump stations, and underground utilities. The position also includes periods of office work to review plans, prepare reports, and organize construction documentation. The work environment supports professional growth in both field and office aspects of construction engineering, offering long-term opportunities to advance into project management or design engineering roles.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kalamazoo, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $33.00/hr.
