The City of Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation is seeking motivated, community‑minded individuals to join our Code Enforcement Division. As a Code Enforcement Inspector, you will play a key role in supporting safe, healthy, and well‑maintained neighborhoods across our city.
This is meaningful work where every day offers something different—whether you’re out in the field conducting inspections, helping property owners understand standards, or ensuring compliance with the Virginia Maintenance Code and local property maintenance codes.

Minimum Requirements:
CODE INSPECTOR I MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus four (4) years experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities in fields such as general building construction, fire or housing code inspections, and a general knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems; or any equivalent combination of education (above high school), training, and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid drivers license .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must obtain certification as a Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector within 18
months from date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.
CODE INSPECTOR II MINIMUMS: High school or GED plus five (5) years’ experience in such positions as Housing Code
Inspector or Property Maintenance Inspector utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Successful completion of state-mandated
Core and Property Maintenance Training Modules and certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; successful completion of the four (4) modules (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing) that are required for certification as a One- and Two-Family Combination Inspector or Residential Combination Inspector. Must have a current and valid driver’s license

Preferences:
State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector; experience enforcing property maintenance, building, or fire codes; experience performing field inspections for Code Compliance; experience talking to members of the public, explaining regulations, and resolving conflicts; experience using inspections or other records management databases.
Special Instructions:
VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
