The Fleet Maintenance Superintendent position is a Closed Promotional opportunity, available to any regular full-time City employee who has successfully completed the original probationary period or to any at-will full-time City employee who has completed twelve months of consecutive employment. Under general direction, this position oversees the City’s Fleet Division and leads the day-to-day operations, programs, and activities supporting the City’s Enterprise Fleet program. This role includes operational oversight of fleet maintenance and repair, vehicle and equipment replacement planning, fleet administration, safety and compliance programs, fuel management systems, and emergency response support.

As the City continues investing in service delivery and infrastructure, this position represents an opportunity to support an expanded portfolio of fleet responsibilities while helping position the City’s fleet program for the future.

Your Day-to-Day
  • Fleet Operations Leadership: Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily fleet maintenance operations, preventive maintenance programs, equipment readiness, and service delivery for City departments.
  • Program Administration: Support oversight of the City’s enterprise fleet program, including fleet replacement planning, asset management systems, fuel operations, reporting, and program performance monitoring.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, coach, and develop assigned staff; support training, performance management, and a strong culture of accountability and safety.
  • Strategic Planning & Budgeting: Participate in fleet planning, equipment procurement, budget development, and long-range strategies that support operational needs.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety: Oversee compliance with applicable regulations, environmental and safety requirements, and support continuous improvement in fleet practices.
  • Project & Customer Support: Partner with departments citywide to support equipment needs, service priorities, and solutions that enhance reliability and customer service.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in after-hours response and support emergency operations as needed.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:Principles of mechanics, trouble-shooting and repair for gasoline and diesel engines, fuel systems, ignition systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, braking systems and suspension systems; current methods, terminology, equipment, tools and materials used in the overhaul, repair, maintenance and adjustment of vehicles and equipment that may be within the City’s fleet; applicable federal, state and local codes and regulations relative to the assigned division area; principles of organization, administration, budget and personnel management; principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluation; principles and practices of record-keeping and report preparation and various office equipment including copier, calculator and computer utilizing various related software programs.
Ability to:
Use good judgment in the scope of assigned authority; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective relations with City employees, the public and other agencies; plan, coordinate, schedule and estimate repair and maintenance work; supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of Fleet staff; operate office, shop and field equipment; perform skilled automotive and heavy/light equipment repair; maintain accurate and concise records; train and evaluate staff; interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations; perform complex, difficult and emergency repairs to vehicles and equipment; and demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community.Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/TrainingAn Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in automotive technology, business administration, public administration or a related field.
Experience
Five years of responsible experience in vehicle, equipment and diesel repair and maintenance, including two years of lead supervisory experience.Experience with computer programs used for repair diagnostics, preventive maintenance and fleet management is required.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATEPossession of an appropriate, valid California Class A driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
