The UHealth Laboratories Department at UHealth/University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 at the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building.

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 2 performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing. Transports specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately. Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner. Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement. Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol. Participate in the IHL histology administration clinical support on-call schedule rotation as assigned (including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays on a rotation basis). Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations. Generates patient reports and forwards them to the proper departments/physicians. Investigates and responds to all inquiries or problems related to referral testing; Answers all inquiries made by the Reference Lab and resolves problems associated with improper or inadequate samples. Answers all inquiries made by physicians or patient unit personnel related to specimen requirements. Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock when it applies Checks packing slips, verifies number of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee. Serves as a lead/Back-up when Supervisor is unavailable. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Coordinate, schedule, and communicate clinical specimen pick-up from the Hospital.
  • Manage clinical and research cases in IHL histology laboratory information system.
  • Accurately enter clinical information from received anatomic pathology requisitions.
  • Create order on Epic and accession all clinical anatomic pathology specimens into laboratory information system.
  • Maintain the required log sheets and laboratory databases up to date, including but not limited to those pertaining to receiving clinical specimens, turnaround time, and phone call log.
  • Obtain transplant related clinical information from different laboratory information systems (i.e., transplant date, PRA information, etc.) and enter into each case at the time of accessioning as applicable.
  • Organize clinical anatomic pathology cases for pathologist review. Communicate with pathologists when clinical cases are ready review.
  • Accurately and timely enter special stains and additional studies that are ordered by the pathologists into the IHL histology laboratory information system.
  • Email signed out preliminary, addendum, and amendment clinical anatomic pathology reports to the ordering physician and/or corresponding clinical teams.
  • Keep track of completed and pending items for clinical anatomic pathology cases.
  • Keep track pf completed and pending items for research anatomic pathology cases.
  • Manage IHL histology cases in JMH anatomic pathology Laboratory information system, including ensuring that the JMH surgical number is assigned, transcribing interpretations from IHL Histology’s laboratory information system, and accurately entering order, special/IHC stains orders for all clinical cases as they are completed by the pathologist.
  • Communicate with ordering physician regarding approval of additional testing requested by pathologist.
  • Prepare cases for multidisciplinary conferences as required.
  • Prepare and ship samples for electron microscopy.
  • Manage pathologist on-call calendar for donor biopsy service.
  • Participate in the IHL histology administration clinical support on-call schedule rotation.
  • Provide shift coverage as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Previous experience with Epic and Copath preferred.
