Department Overview

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides innovative, quality care for cosmetic and plastic surgery needs while simultaneously training surgeons to become experts in the field. Its faculty are specialists in their practice, including breast reconstruction, hand surgery, pediatric cleft and craniofacial surgery, gender affirming surgery and microsurgery. The team of plastic surgeons sponsors a six-year integrated plastic surgery residency program, a hand surgery fellowship program and, together with the Department of Urology, a gender surgery fellowship program.

Function/Duties of Position

Clinical Activities

APPs serve as a critical operational and clinical anchor across the care continuum, supporting patient flow, care quality, and interdisciplinary coordination.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery APPs provide comprehensive care across reconstructive and elective surgical populations. The role is designed to support continuity across the full episode of care while maintaining flexibility to respond to variable clinical demand.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is a high-variability service, with demand driven by elective surgical volume, urgent and add-on cases, and inpatient census fluctuations. APP staffing and scheduling are structured to balance outpatient access, and procedural and operative support.

Outpatient and Perioperative Care

• APPs play a central role in outpatient and perioperative care, supporting patient access, surgical preparation, and postoperative continuity.
• Responsibilities include:
• New patient evaluations and surgical consultations
• Preoperative assessments, optimization, and surgical planning
• Postoperative follow-up and complication management
• Longitudinal management of reconstructive patients
• Wound care and recovery monitoring
• Minor in-clinic procedures within scope
• Patient education and perioperative coordination
• Management of patient communications, prescription requests, and triage

Procedural ResponsibilitiesAPPs perform minor procedures within their scope of practice and credentialing, supporting both inpatient and outpatient efficiency. These may include wound care, dressing changes, suture and drain removal, and device management as appropriate.

Operating Room SupportAPPs may assist in the operating room based on case complexity, trainee availability, and service needs. Operating room participation is a flexible responsibility intended to support surgical flow while maintaining priority focus on outpatient and inpatient responsibilities.

Care Coordination, Documentation, and QualityAPPs are responsible for ensuring high-quality, compliant, and coordinated care delivery across all settings.This includes:

• Timely and accurate documentation in Epic with attention to billing, compliance, and regulatory standards
• Coordination of care across inpatient and ambulatory settings
• Communication with referring providers and primary care clinicians to ensure continuity
• Active participation in quality improvement initiatives focused on patient outcomes, throughput, and length of stay Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered care

All APPs are expected to support the clinical, education, and research mission of OHSU through routine clinical care that includes working with students, trainees, and patients participating in research, consistent with their role, scope of practice, and applicable contract and institutional policies.

Required Qualifications

• Successful completion of a Master Degree in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing in the specialty of Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG ACNP) from an accredited program, A recognized APRN specialty (Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or Nurse Practitioner), - OR -
• Successful completion of a Master Degree in Physician Assistant/Associate Studies from an accredited program.
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
• Ability to work as a team member in an interdisciplinary setting.
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills in verbal, written, and electronic media.
• Computer skills
• Current PA licensure with the Oregon Medical Board.
• Current NCCPA Certification.
• Current BLS, ACLS or PALS Certification.
• DEA Certification.
• - OR –
• Current RN and APRN NP licensure with the Oregon Board of Nursing.
• Current national ANCC Certification in the area of specialization.
• Current BLS, ACLS or PALS Certification as indicated for the position.
• DEA Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years experience in Med-Surg prefered, but new graduates encourtaged to apply

• Epic electronic medical record system

Additional Details

• Variable schedule aligned with clinical demand, typically providing daytime weekday coverage between 0700–1800.
• Clinical exposure to high-acuity pediatric surgical patients in a fast-paced, dynamic care environment.
• Frequent interruptions and competing priorities requiring flexibility, organization, and adaptability.
• Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and procedural environments inherent to clinical settings.
• May require acquisition of additional skills during the probationary period to safely and effectively care for the designated patient population.
• Requires the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, activities, and assignments amid frequent change and workload fluctuations.
• Work environment may involve heightened auditory and visual stimulation.
• Requires prolonged computer use, as needed.
• Must be able to safely operate all patient care and office equipment within the assigned work area.
