Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) has a position opening for an Civil Engineer Supervisor within the Engineering and Technical Services Divison (ETSD). The Civil engineer Supervisor will lead an exceptional group of water engineers to deliver Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) from theOptions Analysis through Design and Construction. This person will guide the Water Engineering Design group as they provide subject matter expertise on water system designs and rehabilitation projects.   • Supervises staff performing or serves as project engineer and Engineer of Record on the most technically complex, visible and/or controversial projects or programs involving several design specialties including: Drinking water pipelines, conveyance pipes, valving, pump stations, ER-DIP, cathodic protection, water system appurtenances, site restoration, ADA ramp designs, and general utility infrastructure projects.
  • Supervises activities of a design team in the preparation of preliminary and long range plans, schedules, estimates, budgets, detailed final construction plans, specifications, and agreements. Oversees project progress from design through construction.
  • Monitors the work of consultants and construction contractors to ensure compliance with contract provisions and scope of work.
  • Supervises the preparation of a variety of reports, correspondence and official documents.
  • Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
  • Supervises the growth and development of staff.
  • Ensure high quality design products from staff.


Education: A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to complete professional Civil Engineering work.

Experience: Requires six years professional civil engineering experience, including two years supervisory experience

License, Certification and Other Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

**This job requires a professional engineering license in the state of Washington**

Special Conditions:

Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.

  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

The full salary range for this position is $81.17 per hour - $94.12 per hour.


This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Starting January 2, 2025, City employees will have the option to work remotely two days per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
