Job Title: Civil Engineer
Job Description

The Civil Engineer will support commercial and residential land development projects by performing site grading, stormwater management, and earthwork analysis using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D. The role includes preparing permit applications and technical reports, assisting senior engineers with site plan development, coordinating with project team members, and communicating directly with clients. The Civil Engineer will also conduct site visits and contribute to utility and stormwater design while working closely with project managers in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D to perform site grading, stormwater management, and earthwork analysis for land development projects.
  • Assist senior engineers in developing commercial and residential site plans from concept through final design.
  • Prepare permit applications, engineering calculations, and technical reports in support of project approvals.
  • Coordinate daily with project team members, including project managers and other engineers, to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to clarify project requirements, provide updates, and address technical questions.
  • Support the design of stormwater management systems, including stormwater management design, stormwater design, and stormwater management ordinances compliance.
  • Contribute to utility design, including sanitary sewer and other civil utility systems, as part of overall civil design.
  • Conduct site visits, typically about 10% of the time, to observe field conditions, verify design assumptions, and support construction-related activities.
  • Apply working knowledge of state and regional regulations and stormwater management ordinances to ensure compliant designs.
  • Collaborate with multiple internal teams (such as commercial and industrial project teams) to gain experience across a variety of project types.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and support timely, cost-effective engineering solutions in line with company standards.
  • Participate in a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within a multidisciplinary engineering consulting environment.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Civil Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and the ability to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • 1.5–2 years of site design experience in civil engineering, preferably in land development.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation or strong willingness to learn it if currently proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil engineering design tasks such as grading and site design.
  • Working knowledge and experience with state and regional regulations and stormwater management ordinances (preferred).
  • Technical experience in stormwater management, stormwater design, and stormwater management design.
  • Experience with grading, land development, and civil design for commercial and/or residential projects.
  • Ability to contribute to utility design, including sanitary sewer and related civil infrastructure.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills for working with project teams and clients.
  • Ability to conduct site visits and translate field observations into practical design solutions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with both MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D is highly beneficial, especially for supporting multiple office locations.
  • Exposure to commercial, industrial, and residential land development projects.
  • Interest in working within a multidisciplinary consulting environment that includes engineering, environmental, and surveying services.
  • Motivation to grow into increased responsibility and pursue PE licensure.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work with different project managers and teams to broaden technical experience.
Work Environment

This role is based primarily in an office environment and will start as 100% in-office. The engineering group includes approximately 40–50 professionals, with about seven engineers working closely together in the immediate space. The Civil Engineer will be assigned to a specific team, such as commercial or industrial, while still having the opportunity to collaborate across teams and gain experience on a wide variety of project types. Approximately 90% of the time will be spent in the office at an individual desk or cubicle with a dedicated computer setup, and about 10% of the time will involve site visits. A company vehicle is not provided; however, mileage reimbursement is offered for travel to project sites. The broader organization consists of multiple offices and offers a full range of engineering, environmental, and surveying services, providing access to a multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals. There is close collaboration with another office that uses Civil 3D, allowing engineers with Civil 3D experience to contribute to additional projects. The culture emphasizes long-term employee retention, professional growth, individualized attention to projects, and a yearly bonus structure based on both company and individual performance.
