Job Title: Civil CAD Designer

About the Role

The Civil CAD Designer plays a key role in supporting a diverse range of land development projects throughout central Ohio. This position focuses on producing high‑quality civil engineering drawings and models using AutoCAD Civil 3D, working closely with engineers, surveyors, clients, and contractors to deliver accurate, constructible site plans.

Projects include stormwater drainage, sanitary sewers, waterlines, storm sewers, and supporting civil infrastructure. This role is well‑suited for an experienced CAD professional who can work independently, communicate effectively, and is motivated to learn and apply new technologies while navigating state and local design and approval requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed civil engineering drawings for site development, including stormwater drainage, sanitary sewers, waterlines, storm sewers, and related design information.
  • Develop construction drawings and CAD models using AutoCAD Civil 3D for a wide range of land development projects.
  • Assist with the design of stormwater management systems, sanitary sewer systems, water distribution systems, and roadway alignments.
  • Create and refine surface grading plans using contours and spot elevations.
  • Import, interpret, and apply survey data, aerial imagery, and GIS files to support design efforts.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, surveyors, and design professionals to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and assist with cost estimates for civil site work.
  • Support permitting processes by preparing documentation, plan sets, and responses to agency comments.
  • Maintain organized project files and adhere to company drafting standards and QA/QC procedures.
  • Communicate design intent clearly with internal teams, clients, and contractors.
  • Contribute to a variety of project types, including municipal, urban redevelopment, education, retail, parks and recreation, subdivisions, and healthcare developments.
  • Gradually take on increased responsibility, with the opportunity to help run projects as a designer once comfortable in the role.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of site civil design experience, including grading, site layout, stormwater drainage, sanitary sewers, waterlines, and storm sewers.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, with the ability to independently develop construction drawings and models.
  • Solid experience with grading design, surface development, feature lines, pipe part libraries, and pipe networks.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a deadline‑driven environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with teams, clients, and contractors.
  • Working knowledge of State of Ohio and local agency design and approval requirements.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to a team.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles related to stormwater, sanitary sewer, water distribution, and roadway design.

Additional Skills & Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Civil engineering degree or related technical degree.
  • Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) credential.
  • Survey CAD experience, including working with survey data and files.
  • Experience importing and interpreting GIS files and aerial imagery.
  • Interest in learning and applying new technologies within a design and drafting environment.
  • Desire for career growth, including potential progression into project management roles.
  • Membership in professional organizations, with company support available for dues and membership fees.
  • Experience contributing to projects such as municipal, urban redevelopment, education, retail, parks and recreation, subdivisions, and healthcare developments.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Columbus, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00/hr.
