What you will do:

You will serve as SCDOR’s Chief Legal Counsel, leading the legal division and advising executive leadership on complex tax, regulatory, and litigation matters that impact the collection and distribution of over $13 billion in state revenue.

Primary job duties include:

  • Serving as a member of SCDOR’s executive management team, advising the Director and executive leadership on legal matters impacting tax administration, regulatory programs, and agency operations
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of SCDOR’s policy on tax, regulatory, and administrative laws, ensuring consistency through the litigation and appeals process
  • Interpreting and applying complex state and local tax laws, and providing guidance on the administration of regulatory programs, including alcohol, tobacco, and bingo licensing
  • Directing all litigation involving SCDOR and serving as senior counsel on complex or high-profile cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts
  • Representing the State in major litigation for state tax law including corporate tax, sales tax, income tax, criminal prosecution, and bankruptcy litigation
  • Leading and developing SCDOR’s legal team, including attorneys and support staff, and overseeing legal research, case preparation, and court filings

Requires all the following:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or its equivalent from an accredited law school
  • Experience as a practicing attorney
  • Must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Six years of experience as a practicing attorney with experience in complex trial/case preparation and presentation
  • Thorough knowledge of statutory and case laws of SC
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory and tax laws, rules of evidence, rules of civil procedure, and rules of the Administrative Law Court
