Charge Nurse Assigned to Care Campus

The Charge Nurse is responsible for overseeing daily medical operations serving inmates/detainees/clients at the Pennington County Jail, Western SD Juvenile Services Center and the Care Campus. The Charge Nurse ensures proper care and treatment of inmates/detainees/clients while maintaining compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Supervise assigned medical staff, assist in the hiring process, training, and scheduling, enforce policy and manage performance though writing annual staff evaluations.
  • Collaborate with the applicable health authorities to ensure the provision of proper health services to clients/detainees/inmates.
  • Serve as a liaison to other divisions, medical providers, attorneys, client/detainee/inmate families and outside officials regarding client/detainee/inmate medical care.
  • Ensure compliance with the governing standards and regulations.
  • Utilize program and client/detainee/inmate information and data to plan, organize and implement program changes as required.
  • Meet with the Sheriff, Chief Deputy and other management staff to discuss policies, procedures and programs that affect the operation of the medical unit and to assist in department-wide planning and program development.
  • Provide training to security staff, to include health assessment, communicable disease, medical condition signs and symptoms, first aid, etc.
  • Assist in finding relatable staff education and trainings to meet facility education standards annually.
  • Formulate goals and objectives for the medical components of the Jail, Juvenile Services Center and Care Campus.
  • Serve as a mentor and mediator for medical staff and assist in conflict resolution between staff members.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all county policies and procedures.

Education and/or Experience Required:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Preference given to those with prior supervisory experience in a medical environment.
  • One year of experience working in a fast-paced environment, diverse duties and familiarity with compliance standards.
  • Current South Dakota Registered Nurse License or ability to readily obtain a South Dakota state certification as a Registered Nurse.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License within 90 days of moving to South Dakota.
Working Environment:
  • Scheduled shift coverage and on-call coverage are expected based on operational needs and may include evenings and weekends as required.
  • This position will work in secured correctional, detox and addiction treatment facilities, allowing the potential for exposure of inappropriate language, smells, gestures and behavior.
  • This position will be subject to set boundaries and care protocols to assist with their safety and security.

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 200 pounds.
  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone and in person.
  • Ability to push/pull a medication cart on occasion. When fully loaded, the medication cart weights approximately 200 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, sit and reach with hands and arms.
