Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Tumor Registrar / Oncology Data Specialist to join our healthcare team. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and maintaining accurate cancer registry data in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of oncology data abstraction, medical terminology, and hospital workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Abstract and code cancer cases from medical records in accordance with established guidelines
- Maintain and manage the hospital’s tumor registry database with a high level of accuracy
- Ensure compliance with reporting standards set by national and state regulatory agencies
- Perform case finding, follow-up, and data quality audits
- Collaborate with physicians, oncology teams, and other healthcare staff to ensure complete and accurate data capture
- Prepare and submit reports to regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders
- Participate in cancer committee meetings and support cancer program initiatives
- Monitor patient outcomes and survival data for quality improvement and research purposes
- Ensure timely reporting of cases and adherence to registry deadlines
- Assist in training staff on documentation and registry requirements
- Stay current with changes in oncology coding standards, registry requirements, and compliance guidelines
- Support clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation processes
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of Tumor Registry experience in an acute care hospital or equivalent setting
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Experience with cancer data abstraction and registry software
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
Certifications & Licensure
- CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) or ODS (Oncology Data Specialist) certification required
- RHIA or RHIT (or eligibility) required
- National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) Certificate.
