Job Description

The Building Engineer operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs facility equipment across multiple commercial facilities. This role requires deep technical expertise in at least one core trade—such as electrical, HVAC, piping/plumbing, or central utility plant operations—along with the ability to perform multi-skilled tasks across additional disciplines. The Mobile Engineer 3 ensures that building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards while providing high-quality facility services and support.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment across multiple commercial facilities.
  • Perform maintenance, monitoring, and repairs on mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire life safety, and control systems to ensure facilities meet applicable standards.
  • Travel between multiple facilities to verify proper operation and functionality of building systems and equipment.
  • Manage facility services, including preventative maintenance, purchasing and inventory control, oversight of contracted maintenance, general maintenance activities, and technical support across systems.
  • Maintain HVAC systems and associated equipment by cleaning, inspecting, calibrating, and replacing parts to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Record equipment readings, interpret data, and make necessary adjustments to maintain proper operation and system efficiency.
  • Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in all work areas and mechanical spaces.
  • Perform periodic inspections of tools, instruments, and equipment to ensure proper inventory, functionality, and readiness for use.
  • Monitor the quality and cost of maintenance work performed by external contractors and provide feedback or corrective direction as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, maintain good housekeeping practices, and promote safe work areas.
  • Identify potential hazards in the workplace and recommend or implement corrective actions to eliminate or reduce risks.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience maintaining and repairing commercial building systems.
  • Proven ability to analyze commercial or industrial mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, diagnose malfunctions, and perform corrective actions.
  • EPA 608 Type II Certification.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in at least one core trade area such as electrical, HVAC, piping/plumbing, or central utility plant operations.
  • Ability to travel between multiple facilities as part of daily responsibilities.
  • Strong commitment to safety practices and compliance with hazardous materials policies.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • EPA 608 Universal Certification is preferred.
  • Two years of trade school education in electrical system design, refrigeration, or HVAC systems is preferred.
  • Multi-skilled capability across additional disciplines beyond a primary core trade.
  • Ability to oversee and evaluate the work of external maintenance contractors.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage preventative maintenance, inventory control, and documentation.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license is explicitly not required for this role.

Work Environment

This position is based in a corporate office building environment in Bethesda, supporting commercial building systems and infrastructure. You will work with standard building maintenance tools, instruments, and computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel to document work, record equipment readings, and manage maintenance activities. The environment emphasizes safety, clean and organized work areas, and adherence to established procedures for handling hazardous materials.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bethesda, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $36.00/hr.
