ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
The Rutherford County Library System (RCLS) comprises six branches and a Bookmobile serving the greater Rutherford County community. RCLS receives funding from three cities (Eagleville, Murfreesboro, and Smyrna) and Rutherford County, though it is governed by the Board of Directors of RCLS (“the Board”). Our mission: Empowering the community with resources to explore, imagine, and engage.
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the RCLS Director of Libraries, the Branch Supervisor will serve as librarian-in-charge of a branch library (under 5,000 sq. ft.), providing leadership for branch staff and managing the overall service plan and operation of the facility, including but not limited to services and programs, customer and community relations, outreach and partnership development, and oversight of the general maintenance and security of the library building and grounds.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises branch personnel, which includes selecting, training, scheduling, assigning work, record keeping, managing workflow and materials handling, evaluating performance, and conducting weekly and monthly staff meetings.
- Supervises maintenance of the building and grounds when applicable.
- Assesses community needs, directing and working with staff to provide relevant library services to the residents living in the service area.
- Initiates, builds, and maintains contacts in the community and works with community organizations in library-connected programs; forms strategic partnerships with neighborhood organizations and businesses to enrich the communities the library serves.
- Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports for the Board and the Stones River Regional Library System.
- Works cooperatively to maximize benefits provided by the Stones River Regional Library System.
- Responsible for reporting funds collected at the branch in accordance with the plans made by the director and the bookkeeper.
- Assists in developing the operating budget; ensures spending and purchases are within the approved budgetary limitations and legal guidelines.
- Prepares and implements grants to support service programs of RCLS.
- Represents RCLS in public forums and civic functions with external agencies, regional communities, neighborhoods, business organizations, schools and school districts, and institutions of higher learning.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years of recent public library experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of library functions and administration. Excellent knowledge of information technology.
- Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; developing staff procedures and guidelines; interpreting statistical data, formulating recommendations, and writing reports; coordinating multiple projects simultaneously; organizing, compiling, and recording information accurately; utilizing word processing, database, and/or spreadsheet software packages.
- Possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or ID.
- Scheduling flexibility is required, but a regular schedule of hours, including nights and weekends, with occasional exceptions, is possible. This position is classified as full-time non-exempt by the Fair Labor Standards Act.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- The job location is at but not limited to one of the specified branches of RCLS.
- The physical condition necessary for the regular and sustained performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces.
- Lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 lbs.) items and occasionally very heavy (50 lbs.+) items.
- Minimal dexterity in using fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment.
- Keyboarding, sitting, or standing for extended periods.
- Tasks require sound, color, depth, and visual perception.
