  • Performs general law enforcement duties to include patrolling the county during an assigned shift in a vehicle, on a motorcycle, or on a bike.
  • Preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crimes.
  • Serving various civil and criminal papers.
  • Responding to calls; apprehending suspects.
  • Transporting suspects and criminals to the County Detention Center, other detention, and mental health facilities.
  • Performing K-9 duties.
  • Participating in community policing functions.
  • Assisting other law enforcement agencies with investigations and emergencies.
  • Rendering appropriate aid and executing related assignments.
  • Work involves frequent public contact, which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness.
  • Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, discussion, and review of reports for adherence to laws, department procedures, and proper judgment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Be a US Citizen
  • Be 20 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Live within a 30 nautical miles radius of Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
  • Be able to perform all essential job functions of an inexperienced officer, unassisted and at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job requirements.
  • Have a valid North Carolina driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Have no serious criminal history.
  • Meet or exceed Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • The candidate must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, modified POPAT exam, reading test, polygraph examination, psychological examination, complete medical examination, and drug screen.
