Ready to help build the future of clean energy? Join our Utility Scale Energy Storage team as a BESS Project Engineer and play a pivotal role in designing and delivering the next generation of battery energy storage systems (BESS). In this role, you’ll bring your technical expertise, problem‑solving mindset, and passion for renewables to high‑impact projects that directly support grid reliability and the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

About the Role

As a BESS Project Engineer, you will plan, design, and guide the execution of large‑scale energy storage projects from concept through commissioning. You’ll collaborate across engineering, construction, procurement, and supplier teams to ensure safe, efficient, and optimized system performance. Your expertise will help shape project outcomes, influence design decisions, and drive continuous improvement across our energy storage portfolio. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and wants to make a meaningful impact in renewable energy.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive project design and engineer major components for utility-scale energy storage systems.
  • Review and enhance engineering drawings, identifying inconsistencies and improving design quality and efficiency.
  • Evaluate engineering studies, spot errors, and recommend corrective and forward‑looking solutions.
  • Prepare detailed technical scopes of work to support contracting and procurement.
  • Support the full project lifecycle, working closely with project managers and cross-functional teams.
  • Influence engineering decisions and maintain strong alignment with stakeholders on technical tasks.
  • Monitor project progress, anticipate risks, and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Collaborate with key suppliers to integrate and optimize major equipment.
  • Work cross‑functionally to solve problems, integrate systems, and enhance performance opportunities.
  • Support permitting processes, propose solutions to legal and design constraints, and contribute to site layout improvements.
  • Take on additional project‑specific responsibilities as needed.
  • Travel up to 25% for site visits and project support.

What You Bring

  • Strong expertise in substation or utility‑scale energy storage design and/or project management.
  • Background in power electronics, BESS design, substation engineering, generation-tie design, or data center infrastructure.
  • Experience with large‑scale power generation or industrial processing plants.
  • Hands-on understanding of construction methods—foundations, trenching, electrical terminations/testing, and safety practices.
  • Knowledge of battery chemistries, power conversion systems, and DC‑DC converters.
  • Familiarity with Li‑ion safety standards: UL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and IFC/IBC requirements.
  • Understanding of interconnection studies and GIA Material Modification Adjustments (MMAs), especially in WECC and CAISO.
  • Experience with permitting and construction contracting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • 5+ years of engineering experience with demonstrated technical maturity and ownership of specialty objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to convey complex concepts to technical and non‑technical audiences.
