Behavior & Placement Technician

What You'll Do

As a Behavior & Placement Technician, you will play a critical role in evaluating, supporting, and advocating for animals in our care. You will help ensure each animal receives individualized attention, behavioral support, and thoughtful placement decisions that promote successful outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting animal intake and follow-up health exams, including vaccines, microchips, weight checks, and behavior observations
  • Performing formal and informal behavior evaluations for dogs and cats
  • Monitoring animal health and behavior changes and communicating concerns to veterinary and behavior teams
  • Providing enrichment and behavior support strategies to improve animal well-being
  • Assisting with safe animal movement and handling throughout the shelter
  • Consulting with adopters to support successful transitions into the home
  • Training staff and volunteers on safe animal handling techniques
  • Assisting with dangerous or fractious animal handling requests
  • Serving as the Euthanasia Lead and performing humane euthanasia in accordance with HSPPR and HSUS best practices
  • Participating in emergency animal transport as needed
  • Maintaining accurate documentation using objective, behavior-based language
What We're Looking For

Successful candidates will bring compassion, professionalism, emotional resilience, and strong observational skills to the role.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience working in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, zoological settings, or animal handling environments
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, positive reinforcement, and temperament assessment
  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in emotionally challenging situations
  • Euthanasia by Injection (EBI) certification or ability to obtain within one year
  • Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and shelter software systems
Physical & Schedule Requirements

This is a physically active, hands-on role requiring:

  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and animal handling
  • Ability to lift and move 25–40 pounds
  • Comfort working with animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical or behavioral needs
  • Exposure to animal allergens, cleaning chemicals, zoonotic diseases, noise, and varying environmental conditions

Schedule:

  • Full-time
  • Regular weekend shifts required
  • Availability for mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional emergency response needs
