Associate Veterinarian - On-Call (Cornerstone Animal Center)

Summary:
We are seeking a qualified veterinarian to fill open shifts at the Cornerstone Animal Center Animal Center in Visalia, CA. Interested professionals with proven surgical skills, a commitment to teamwork, a positive attitude for problem solving and communication, and the desire to learn and grow should apply. We are open to providing training to DVMs who are interested in improving their high quality, high volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) skills. Shifts are scheduled based on your availability.

Essential Duties and Functions:
Veterinary Medical Care

  • Assess animals pre- and post-operatively to ensure appropriate candidacy for surgery and healing
  • Perform 25-30+ high quality spay/neuter surgical procedures per day for client-owned and shelter animals, as well as community cats.
  • Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications of outpatient animals[CH1] as well as oversee vaccination clinic.
  • Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols
  • Adhere to aseptic/sterile techniques throughout surgical process
  • Must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure proper collection of data to maintain comprehensive and detailed medical records in compliance with all laws/regulations.
  • Provide select veterinary services including mass removals, wound management and other minor procedures in accordance with Cornerstone Animal Center guidelines.
  • Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled drugs and work with our pharmacy staff as needed to follow prescription protocols.
  • Triage and refer cases that do not fall within the clinic’s parameters of care as appropriate.

Administrative Duties

  • Keep thorough and accurate medical records in compliance with all laws/regulations and collaborate with partner shelter administrative staff to ensure proper collection of data

Open Communication

  • Facilitate good working relationships through professional demeanor, teamwork and collaboration
  • Facilitate and participate in open communication throughout the Cornerstone Animal Center.
  • Embrace and promote Cornerstone Animal Center’s direct communication program.

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment, following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols
  • Participate in keeping the work environment clean and well-maintained

Reporting Relationships and Contacts:Reports to the Executive Director, Cornerstone Animal Center

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited veterinary medical college – DVM or equivalent
  • Licensed to practice in the State of California
  • Experience in HQHVSN or shelter medicine is a plus, but not required
  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Cornerstone Animal Center
  • Demonstrated aptitude in clinical medicine and surgery
  • Demonstrated success in working with a diverse team of professionals, skilled in managing varied relationships and successful at facilitating collaboration and cooperation
  • Knowledge of methods and means of dealing with human behavior situations in a variety of business circumstances
  • Proficient in effective written and oral communication within a varied range of audiences and settings
  • Ability to mediate conflicts and give and receive feedback
  • Willingness to work the hours necessary to accomplish targeted responsibilities
  • Ability to delegate responsibility, achieve and measure results with team members
  • Commitment to practice excellent quality medicine and uphold the veterinary code of ethics

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
The physical requirements described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the job's essential functions.

  • Regular standing, bending, stooping and crouching while seeing patients and performing surgery
  • Intermittent sitting at computer stations and operation of electronic equipment
  • Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
  • Frequent lifting, carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel area
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
  • Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

Salary and Benefits:Compensation is $1,300 per shift worked. (Clinic days can vary, 6-10 hours)


Eligible for the following benefits: You will be covered by the Cornerstone Animal Center’s Worker’s Compensation and Professional Liability insurance;, sick time accrual that meets California state law, inclusion in all Cornerstone Animal Center hospital meetings and continuing education events. In addition, the Cornerstone Animal Center will contribute payroll taxes and withhold appropriate local, state, federal and social security taxes on your behalf and issue a W-2 at the end of the year (rather than a 1099).
