Associate General Counsel - Commercial Real Estate

Robert Half
Arlington, VA

A well-known national fitness brand is hiring for an experienced, business‑oriented real estate attorney to support and help scale its in‑house leasing function. This role will serve as a primary legal partner to the real estate team and will have direct ownership over a growing portfolio of retail locations across multiple states. The position reports to the company’s top legal leader and offers meaningful autonomy in a fast‑moving environment.

This opportunity is well‑suited for an attorney who enjoys being close to the business, balancing risk with growth objectives, and operating as a trusted advisor rather than a back‑office reviewer.

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as lead counsel for commercial leasing matters across a national retail portfolio.
  • Draft, negotiate, and revise lease agreements, amendments, and ancillary real estate documents, including estoppels, SNDA agreements, and commencement-related paperwork.
  • Respond to landlord communications, assess notice requirements, and advise internal teams on compliance and enforcement considerations.
  • Conduct lease diligence and real estate document reviews for new site acquisitions and portfolio changes.
  • Collaborate closely with real estate, construction, facilities, and operations stakeholders to anticipate and resolve issues before they impact the business.
  • Provide practical, risk‑balanced guidance on cross‑functional projects and initiatives tied to the company’s expansion strategy.

What the Client Is Looking For

  • At least five years of hands‑on commercial real estate experience gained in a law firm and/or corporate legal department.
  • Strong command of retail leasing, landlord‑tenant law, and commercial real estate transactions.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of matters independently while meeting time‑sensitive deadlines.
  • Commercially focused judgment with a solutions‑driven approach to advising non‑legal partners.
  • Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills with close attention to detail.
  • Collaborative mindset and comfort working with senior leaders across multiple functions.
  • Juris Doctor degree and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
